7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.
what was gain to me...
this is all his past life
now he says he counted it as a loss
he is going to keep using this word for loss
why?
for Christ
explains more in verse 8-9
8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
Why is all his righteousness a loss?
because as verse 9 described
through faith in Jesus we receive a righteousness from God
and no longer have to earn his own righteousness by the law.
so he no longer needs to count on his righteousness
even says I suffer the loss
as he counts his past as a loss.
Lets note each time he refers to this loss but look at the reason why
v.7 - counted loss for Christ
v. 8 - count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ
v. 8- count them as rubbish that i may gain Christ.
