Intro Option 1: Tricky Questions
Group students into teams; have them write their answers down on a notecard
How many letters are in the alphabet? (11)
If there are eight oranges in a bag and you take away two, how many do you have?
What’s something that has teeth but can’t chew?
Some questions = really tricky
Religious leaders = tough questions > trick Jesus
But Jesus used wisdom to display His authority
23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
Pharisees believed resurrection
Bud Sadducees did not
Only believed Pentateuch
Resurrection doctrine: late in OT (Isa. 26:19; Dan. 12:2; Habakkuk; Job; Psalm 73)
When Sadducees questioned Jesus about His view of marriage, they intended to trap Him
The assumption = a continuation of marriages
Question was invalid
Jesus pointed to Scripture and focused on the truth that we’ll be resurrected
God is the God of the living
Ask Read John 14:6. How does this passage connect to the idea of the resurrection?
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus = way to the Father
Eternal life through resurrection
Jesus offers real life: abundant and eternal
Full life = limited on earth, but assurance of eternity
Ask: Why is it important to answer people’s questions using Scripture like Jesus did in this passage?
Sadducees = very familiar with passage
Had failed to see meaning in it
Jesus answered frequently using God’s word
Exodus 3:6, 15 (the Pentateuch)
That’s our model
Depend on own explanations = misrepresent God, lead others astray
God’s Word helps us answer all of life’s biggest questions.
Essential Doctrine: Resurrection
Both the Old and New Testaments teach that one day believers will experience a resurrection of the body from the dead. The promise of the resurrection is found in the resurrection of Christ from the dead, and it will take place at the future return of Christ. Because Christ was the firstfruit of the resurrection, Christians can be assured that their resurrection will be similar in nature, meaning it will be both bodily and glorious. The hope of the future resurrection gives Christians confidence that death has been defeated in the death and resurrection of Christ.
Big Question: What will our resurrected bodies be like?
Our earthly bodies are limited and temporary. They aren’t designed to last forever because of the fall in Eden, and they break down in many ways physically and mentally. Sin’s effect on our bodies is apparent in all of us, but God will one day redeem our earthly bodies and give us new ones. The Bible says our resurrected bodies will shed all signs of sin. We will no longer experience sickness, death, or pain, and we won’t cry. These bodies are described as glorious, powerful, and spiritual. We don’t know all the details, but Scripture says we will be like Christ, and we will be able to see God. Simply put: our resurrected bodies will be everything God intended them to be before our fall.
Transition Statement: Not only was the Resurrection at the center of importance for Jesus to explain
Main Point: Jesus shows His wisdom and authority
Jesus affirms the reality of the resurrection
Jesus clarifies the centrality of love
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Human trait to rank things
Who’s the strongest?
Who’s the fastest?
The worst?
Tier lists
Do this with rules too
Which rules matter, which ones can ignore
Religious leaders debated those
Jesus simplified it; love is at the center of it all.
Heart, soul, mind = ultimate loyalty
Ask: When have you done something for someone because you had to rather than to show love?
Mow lawn bc parents made you
Attend family function instead of something fun with friends
Did these things, but wanted to do something else
Selfish mentality = doing thing for others is burden
When train our minds to put Christ and others first, burden is lifted > act out of love
Ask: What can happen if love for God isn’t at the center of our obedience?
Burn out
Grow weary > resent rules
Not checking off boxes: relationship rooted in love
When we love Christ-truly love Him-then everything else flows out of that love.
We obey Him because we want to, not because we must
Hierarchy of law: heart attitude must be correct
If absent, becomes legalism
Following Jesus is our delight instead of our burden, and we do our best to obey His Word
Transition Statement: Jesus ability to speak into these things demonstrate His authority
Main Point: Jesus shows His wisdom and authority
Jesus affirms the reality of the resurrection
Jesus clarifies the centrality of love
Jesus claims the authority of the Messiah
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,
44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet” ’?
45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
This moment = two days before crucifixion
A true mic drop
They were speechless!
Both man and God in flesh
Beyond our understand
Son of David, and David’s Lord who sits at right hand of the Father
Ask: What does it mean for Christ to be your Lord?
Lord = ruler or master
Lordship in our lives = ruler or master
Serve him and are loyal to him, putting His will above ours
We represent Him
Ask: Why do you think Jesus asked the pharisees what they thought about the Messiah (see v. 42)? What did He want them to realize?
Pharisees forced to consider
Psalm 110: One would come after David who is greater
David’s descendent, but David calls Him lord
He was the one David spoke of in the Psalm
Jesus = promised Messiah
Christ Connection:
The religious leaders questioned Jesus to trap Him in His words, but each time, Jesus answered them from the authority of God’s Word. They could not respond. Jesus is the Word of God who came to reveal God perfectly yo us. He has all authority in heaven and on earth.
Head; How does believing in the resurrection encourage you to have greater faith now?
Encourage us through difficulties and pain
Won’t last forever
Will one day fade away
Physical limitations
But one day, made right because of Christ
Resurrected bodies will be different
Enjoy eternal life in God’s presence
Heart: In what ways can you love God with all of your heart, mind, and strength?
This command is simple: love God with everything you are
Love with minds: meditate on word daily to understand and obey
Love with hearts: Apply what we learn
Love with strength: Physically live out commands so that others can know
Do this even with cost, relying on strength of God
Hands: Who are your neighbors? How can you love them?
Neighbor = anyone we may encounter
Parable of Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)
Jews looked down on, but Jesus challenged to stop
Neighbors aren’t just the easy ones; the difficult ones, too
Looked down on; may have hurt us
Show love to ALL people; view EVERYONE as neighbor
Final Takeaway: Live a lifestyle that is characterized by worship (loving God) and ministry (loving others)
