Introduction

The book of Hebrews is all about Christ being better, but not only does Hebrews tell us all the things Christ is better than (the prophets, the angels, Moses, Joshua, Aaron and the tabernacle) it also gives us warnings and here in this passage we see the first warning and that is the warning of drifting.
We all have a tendency to drift, but this is one of those things that we cannot drift from. This morning I want us to look at the seriousness of salvation, the repayment required for our sin debt, the cost of neglecting salvation and lastly how we know we can trust the message.

The seriousness of salvation vs 1

therefore - because of the message he gave us
we ought
ought-To be held or bound in duty or moral obligation.
to give the more earnest heed
earnest- Seriousness
heed - attention
The writer of hebrews tells us that because of the seriousness of the message we have been entrusted with we have a moral obligation to give serious attention to the things we have heard.
We have a serious message and it must be taken seriously.
Do you take the Gospel serious? When I think about the Gospel, I think about the power of the message, believing in the Gospel is the only way to heaven. We have an obligation to give it to others. I know I sound like a broken record, but the reason Christ left the great commission for the church is so the world can get the gospel. He could’ve chosen anything to spread the Gospel, but he chose us and we are obligated to tell others.
If we take it seriously the opportunity can slip or drift away. We must seize every opportunity to share the Gospel to others.
When the Bible here is talking about them slipping, its like letting our thoughts slip out of our heads

The repayment required for our sin debt vs 2

If you believe the word spoken by Angels is steadfast (sure) how much more sure is the word spoken by the Lord.
Just as God dealt with those who disobeyed his word in the Old Testament, he must deal with those who reject his word that was given by his son
The word recompence here means Requital; return of evil or suffering or other equivalent; as a punishment.
If we got what we deserved all of us would would receive hell as our reward for the sins we have committed.
