The Situation in Colossae
The Situation in Colossae
Paul is arguing against those who seek fulfillment outside of Jesus Christ.
Why Can I Only Find Fulfillment in Jesus?
Why Can I Only Find Fulfillment in Jesus?
You have already acknowledged that Jesus is Lord. (v. 6-7)
So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with gratitude.
God has focused his presence in Jesus alone. (v. 8-9)
Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ. For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ,
Jesus fulfills his people beyond what anyone else can offer. (v. 10)
and you have been filled by him, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
Jesus makes us worthy by removing our sinful nature and giving us new life. (v. 11-12; Deuteronomy 30:6-8)
You were also circumcised in him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live. The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. Then you will again obey him and follow all his commands I am commanding you today.
When Do I Receive Fulfillment from Jesus?
When Do I Receive Fulfillment from Jesus?
when you were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
All of this happened when you were baptized. (v. 12)
“I have been baptized. I believe in Jesus Christ. I have received the Sacrament. What do I care if I have been predestined or not?” (Martin Luther)
So then, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in him,
Baptism is not the end—it is the beginning. (Colossians 2:6)

Where are you seeking fulfillment?
Have you been baptized ? (Acts 2:37-38)
When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Are you living like it? (1 Corinthians 6:11)
