Resource: Corporate Worship - Matt Merker (Crossway Publishers)
Who?
Who gathers together?
People who are…
1. Made alive with Jesus (Ephesians 2:1-10)
➡ new life ➡ new speech ➡ new behaviour
2. Joined to God’s family (Eph. 2:13-22, Heb 12:22-24)
➡ invisible ➡ heavenly ➡ universal church (all believers)
3. Joined to a community of Christians (Acts 20:17,
Ephesians 1:1, Revelation 1:11)
➡ visible ➡ earthly ➡ local church (time and place)
Application
If church is “Christians” gathering, then
our worship service should be distinctly
Christian in both form and content.
If church is Christians “gathering,” then
our worship service should be a place to
participate, not isolate.

Why?
Why does our church gather?
God gathers us together for: the praise of His
glory, our personal joy in Him, the mutual good
of His people, a witness to the world.
Why?
Why does our church gather?
God gathers us together . . .
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when
the true worshipers will worship the Father in
spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such
people to worship him. God is spirit, and those
who worship him must worship in spirit and
truth.” (John 4:23-24 ESV)
“As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands; no one seeks for God. All
have turned aside; together they have become
worthless; no one does good, not even one.””
(Romans 3:10-12 ESV)

(Election)
“Even as he chose us in him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be
holy and blameless before him. In love he
predestined us for adoption to himself as
sons through Jesus Christ, according to the
purpose of his will,” (Ephesians 1:4-5 ESV)

God’s glory is the inf inite beauty and greatness
of his manifold perfections - John Piper
“For what can be known about God is plain to
them, because God has shown it to them. For
his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal
power and divine nature, have been clearly
perceived, ever since the creation of the
world, in the things that have been made. So
they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20

“By the word of the Lord the heavens were
made, and by the breath of his mouth all their
host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a
heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all
the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants
of the world stand in awe of him! For he
spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and
it stood f irm.” (Psalm 33:6-9 ESV)

“The Lord upholds all who are falling and
raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of
all look to you, and you give them their food in
due season. You open your hand; you satisfy
the desire of every living thing. The Lord is
righteous in all his ways and kind in all his
works.” (Psalm 145:14-17 ESV)

sons through Jesus Christ, according to the
purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious
grace, with which he has blessed us in the
Beloved. In him we have redemption through
his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses,
according to the riches of his grace,”
