Qeren/Shofar/Teruah
Qeren/Shofar/Teruah
1 Samuel 2:10
1 Samuel 2:10 (TLV)
Those who oppose Adonai
will be shattered.
He thunders against them in heaven.
He judges the ends of the earth.
He gives strength to His king,
exalting the horn of His anointed one.”
This passage is an excellent passage. If there is a passage about the Messiah, this is an excellent one to share especially during this season of Yom Teruah/Rosh Hashanah
The horn is something special. It is used to hold the anointing. As Samuel took the oil in the horn and poured it over King David anointing him and his house as rulers over Israel forever. The horn can also be used as an instrument to sound a warning, war, calling out to G-d who fights for us, and asking G-d to remember His promise to us! When we blow the horn in faith, we ask G-d to remember us through the sacrifice that Messiah made.
There are three main words in the Bible that really point to the Ram’s Horn, or at least we think go the ram’s horn when these are said.
Qeren קרן - Shofar שופר- Teruah תרועה-
Qeren קרן - Horn (My definition of this horn is an enclosed horn or horn that usually is in it’s most natural state. If it has an opening it would not be used as an instrument.)
This word is used when we refer to the Ram that was caught by the “horns” and offered in place of Abrahams son
Or the horns of the altar of sacrifice and altar of incense… it was made as one with the altar
We also know that the blood of the sacrifice for atonement was placed on the “horns” of the altar
This w-rd also refers to the “horn” flask that would carry the anointing oitl.
Aaron is to make atonement upon the horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering throughout your generations. It is most holy to Adonai.”
My God is my rock, in Him I take refuge,
my shield, my horn of salvation,
my stronghold and my refuge,
my Savior—You save me from violence.
My faithfulness and My lovingkindness
will be with him,
and by My Name his horn will be exalted.
It is interesting to how the horn is a staple part of the altar and the sacrifice… it constantly shows that HaShem provides.
In relation to the Akida (Abraham’s sacrifice of his son) G-d gave His one and only son to die on the cross.
He is the horn that bore our burdens. His life was taken in place of ours. His blood was poured out and G-d atoned for our sins. His blood is His life and He is raised up pleasing to G-d.
The Qeren was also used as a type of flask to hold the anointing to which King David would be anointed by Samuel. It is interesting to see how such a majestic item can be used to hold the anointing, but in order for the anointing oil to take effect, it must be poured out. In all the Qeren is not like the shofar, because it is closed off on one or all ends.
“In order for the anointing oil to take effect, it must be poured out.”
Shofar שופר - trumpet/horn instrument
When a horn (qeren) is made so that it makes a sound when blown or wind runs through it, it is called a shofar. The shofar must not have any cracks or holes except for the ends so that one can make the sounds necessary for its use as a trumpet. The Shofar is a great example of Messiah who is the mediator. Another way of thinking about Messiah as the Shofar is the Scripture:
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:36
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
Yeshua is the one who holds the anointing, and He is the one that allows G-d’s goodness to flow. In fact Messiah was in the beginning, and I could even say that, Our idea of the beginning exists because of Him.
All things were made through Him, and apart from Him nothing was made that has come into being. 4 In Him was life… John 1:3-4a
John 1:3–4a (TLV)
All things were made through Him, and apart from Him nothing was made that has come into being. In Him was Life...
Yeshua is One with G-d, and in Him is the life. Just like how G-d’s triune nature is explained, the horn is not separated or apart from the altar. The horn is recognized as a part of the whole altar, and the altar wouldn’t the altar without the horn. So Yeshua is recognized as part of G-d, but not apart from G-d. Rather, G-d wouldn’t be if Yeshua was not.
The word Shofar comes from the root Shafir which means to “amend” or “reform”
As we see, The rams Qeren (Horn) was taken and humbled, and it was made into an instrument that would be used to remind G-d about our need for Him. Yes, when we embrace Yeshua who was humbled for us, G-d remembers us. Yeshua is the one who amends on our behalf. As it is written in Romans 8:1
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Messiah Yeshua.
Now, I want to say something brief, this celebration is not the New Year of the Bible. This is the New Year for the Jewish people and those who practice Judaism. As a Jew, I celebrate Rosh Hashana. However, as a believer in Messiah Yeshua, I celebrate Rosh Hashanah second, because who I celebrate first is Yeshua. I love G-d, I love Yeshua so much that I cannot but recognize His love for me as He has called me and many of us here to Recognize the feast the Bible calls Yom Teruah or the Day of the sounding.
Teruah תרועה means - Sound/Blast
Teruah many times we say is the trumpet, but it is actually more than that. When I think of the Sounding, I think of our faith in action… I think about Messiah when He reads from Isaiah saying… “The Spirit of the L-rd is upon me to proclaim the good news”… I think about the wind/Spirit of Adonai! When we continue to read Romans chapter 8 and go into verse 2 we read:
Romans 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Messiah Yeshua has set you free from the law of sin and death.
When we blow the trumpets in faith that Messiah Yeshua is King of our lives, the one who died and shed His blood for our sins. When we Recognize that He defeated death and rose from the grave, and that He is seated on the right Hand of G-d! When we believe together as we partake together in remembrance of Him and proclaim that HE IS COMING AGAIN!!!
HE Remembers us!
When we blow the trumpets in faith that Messiah Yeshua is King of our lives… He Remember us!
Messiah is instrumental, because without Him, we would not have access to the Father, and we would not have received His Spirit! Listen to this… Have you received Him?
When I ask this question some of you understand what I am saying, but for some of you maybe I have to ask this way….
Is something bothering you? Are you hurt, broken, sick… are you in need of a helping hand? What’s going, are you okay? Because if you are not, I know the
One who can do a great thing in your life today! I really want you to know who Messiah is and what He did for me, for us, and for the many Jewish people that have received Him!
I am telling you, He not only wants to save you, but He is extending His arm out to you right now… you just need to want to be saved. You just need to want to know Him! You just need to want to be found!
Don’t stay a Keren, but humble yourself like the Shofar ask the L-rd into your heart and allow for the Spirit to work in your life. I can hear the Spirit hitting against the wall that was built up… dig deeper, Spirit of G-d, dig deeper. Spirit of G-d let us hear the sound of freedom, Let us hear the sound of healing, let us hear the sound of rejoicing, let us hear! Let us hear the W-rd of Messiah, let us hear Him who makes us complete!
I know many of you have been holding it in, but it is time to let it out! Stop holding Him back and ask Him to flow through your life!
In the Name of Yeshua, I pray that You overflow in this place and let every heart the is humbled before You receive Your Spirit, Your Refreshing. We lift up a Teruah/Shout of Praise to you Yeshua! For it is written, as we let out a Teruah (the Sound of an alarm), You would remember us and save us from all our enemies. If you have faith or want to believe in Messiah invite Him into your life pray with me.... Yeshua!!! “Baruch Haba BeShem Adonai” Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the L-rd”! Yes, Come into my life, save me, help me to believe, because I do believe that you gave your life for me and are alive and seated at the right hand of God! Save me and I will be saved, Heal me and I will be healed! Have mercy on me, on us, on your children Israel and may all see who you are in me. You are my Yeshua!
What better way that to seal this moment with the sounding of the Shofar, and if you do not have a shofar, at the final blast of the shofar called “Tekiah Gadolah”, let us all lift our voices and shofars together!
