Two Mothers are Speaking, do we hear what they are saying?
Hagar is ridiculing and attacking
Sarah is calling for her child’s protection
Both Ismael and Isaac are children of Abraham but one is castaway and the other is become the heir. Which one do we want to be like as christians, the true children of Abraham?
Flesh vs Promise (21-23)
Flesh vs Promise (21-23)
Hagar had Ismael in her own power without any involvement from God
This was a short-term solution that would cause long-term problems
It was void of faith in God
Sarah had Isaac according to the word of God by direct involvement from God
This was after many years of patiently waiting on God’s promise
It took faith, not works of the flesh to make this happen
Bondage vs Free (24-27)
Bondage vs Free (24-27)
Hagar was a bondwoman and all that came from her would remain with her in bondage
This points to Mount Sinai where bondage was brought upon Israel that had no end
Their children’s children would still be under the yoke of bondage
Sarah was the wife of Abraham and free so that all that came from her would remain with her in freedom
Her joy and salvation have come from God who has promised her
Isaiah 54:1 Rejoice thou barren
vs 5, For God is your husband and redeemer
vs 6, God called them when they were nothing and made them what they are
Castaway vs Heir (28-31)
Castaway vs Heir (28-31)
Hagar and her son persecuted and ridiculed Isaac for being the son of an old woman, a tiny baby, second born to Ismael
Genesis 16:4, Genesis 21:6-12 Ishmael and Isaac’s birth
Sarah calls on her husband to remove the bondwoman and her son out of there house so that the true son of Abraham, the true heir would be known to all people
Which mother are you from?
If you are trusting in your own flesh you are in bondage and will be a castaway
If you are trusting in the power and work of God through his promises in his word you are free and will be made a heir with Christ
