Road to Damascus

Acts 9:1–9 (KJV 1900)

1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

Saul was a Pharisee, a proud man who went about threatening and killing Christians. Not because he was a mean person, because he felt that was what would make God satisfied with him!

How long has it been since you heard a message from God? How long has it been since you felt God’s presence? Saul was hoping to hear from God but he hadn’t in a long time. I believe he was tormented within himself!

Acts 9:4–5 (KJV 1900)

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Saul was hearing a message from a man he thought was dead and gone. A man who is a part of the God-head Jesus the son of God!

In 2000 at my ordination service, I can’t say I was just like Saul because I didn’t go around killing Christians, but I did have something in common with him and that was I suffered that whole day should have been happy, I should have been feeling the Holy Spirit and walking on air. But I was in doubt and worried about it.

Alton garrison was the speaker, there were 400+ people in that room and he was used to hearing the praises of a lot of people. That evening during the sermon the message was for me! I don’t know if anyone else even said amen, I was too busy shouting and praising because God was speaking to me I am not even sure what the sermon was now 11 years later but I just know God let me know I was called to be there.

Saul was tormented v4 “Is it not hard for thee to kick against the pricks?”

Saul was doing what he thought was right but it wasn’t. Saul thought he was okay but he wasn’t

How long has it been since you really heard from God? Perhaps like saul you need to be on that road to damascus
