Wise and foolish Builders

Text : Matthew 7:24–27 (KJV 1900)

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Intro - This scripture is all too often pushed off as 2 builders but I feel that it covers more than just 2, rather there are many builders here! Which one are you?

1. A firm foundation is all important!
Psalm62:5-7 KJV
5  My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6    He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

7    In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Maybe you never heard of the “Colossus of Rhodes” or the “Leaning Tower of Pisa” but these are 2 of the many buildings or statues that have fallen or are going because of poor foundation,

The “Colossus of Rhodes” was a giant bronze statue built to over shadow a harbor in the country of Rhodes. It was believed that if anything bad happened to the people of that city the Colossus would immediately become a living giant and save the people of the area. It was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. But a great earthquake happened upon the area and the Colossus fell to pieces.

The “Leaning Tower of Pisa” is a tower built in Italy which because of the clay ground which the Tower is built upon it has been leaning more and more each year. There are currently scientists working upon a plan to try to save the structure before it is too late.

Colossians 2:6-7 (KJV)
6As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: 7Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

2. Why would someone build on the sand?

Matthew 7:26-27 (KJV)
26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

1 Corinthians 3:11-13(NIV)
11For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work.

a. foolish means “lack of judgment”  these suffer from being “Worldly builders” they build on what they see not on faith.

b. There are many who just don’t have the knowledge needed. They just don’t understand what they don’t know!

Afraid, they are scared of what they can’t see
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
3 Altar call : What did you build your life on?
2 Timothy 2:19 (NIV)
19Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”£ and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
