The idea of commercials are that while your attentions is being given, companies take the opportunity to tell you about their product, so you can make an informed decision of weather to buy it.
The truth about commercials is that they try, in 30 seconds or less, to manipulate you into buying their product.
They do this in basically one of 7 ways.
1. Make you feel exclusive.
HD, Ford/Dodge/Chevy.....
2. They use Anthropomorphism
Tony the Tiger.Chic-filet cows.
3. Sex appeal
Beer commercials
4. Catchy Jingles.
McDonalds jingle.
5. They strategize color
Red- call to action, black - sleek and expensive. Green - healthy.
6. Fear of Missing Out.
Ads with “big discount” or timed sales.
7. Doctored visuals
Practically all food commercials.
I guess the point I’m making is that if the ads were completely honest, we would have the freedom to choose or not to choose to buy, free from manipulation.
Honest Commercial
Jesus believes in truth in advertising.
John 15:18–19 NASB95
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
What?!?!?!?
Blue Pill or Red Pill.
The difference is that Morpheus doesn’t tell Neo that real life sucks, and is hard.
John 15:20–21 NASB95
20 “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 “But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
It’s not personal.
Here is the reality.....In today’s culture, here in the US, the world will tolerate you as long as you don’t preach the real Jesus to people.
A lot of people are pseudo-spiritual. Hybrid Christians. A little bible, a little world. “Man upstairs” “Big Guy”
“Jesus loves me and wants me to be happy.”
And they will put up with us, until we tell them the truth.
The reason:
John 15:22–24 NASB95
22 “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 “He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 “If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well.
Warrant and credentials
Jews were trying to receive justification by works.....
If you showed up yesterday because you think cooking for those people brought you one step closer to God, you wasted your Saturday.
John 15:25 NASB95
25 “But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
Jesus closing with a promise.
John 15:26–27 NASB95
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
Truth in Advertising
Yesterday I went over to the stage. They invited me to say something. The timing wasn’t right, because they were getting ready to close the event and they brought another biker church preacher up.
He did a tent revival alter call. Emotionally charged, “if you don’t know that you know, that you know that you know” alter call.
He didn’t say anything that wasn’t true.......
But he didn’t tell them the whole truth either........
It was all rainbows and kittens.
Here is the truth: Someone yesterday went down to the stage, they prayed what that preacher man told them to pray. They then got baptized in the river and had an awesome experience:
Within 72 hours they are going to have doubts, and they will start chasing that emotional high they felt yesterday. And then temptation is going to come, and they are going to be surprised by it. At some point they are going to sin, and feel terrible, but also start to wonder if they “did it right” Doubt will really start to attack them. They will try to resist on their own, because they feel to guilty to ask for help. “They were saved” But the cycle will continue and they will come to the conclusion that “Christianity” is just another bait and switch and walk away from the Lord.
I want to show you the most honest alter call ever given:
Mark 10:17 NASB95
17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
You know the Commandments, Don’t murder, commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t bear false witness, don’t defraud people, Honor your mom and dad.
I’ve done that my whole live.
Check out this alter call:
Mark 10:21 NASB95
21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Here is the real alter call.
Despite what you have heard, God is real. He made you to be in relationship with Himself, but your sin has separated you from Him.
Because He loves you, He provided a way for receive forgiveness by sending His only Son to die on Cross as payment for your sin.
If you accept the Son, you receive forgiveness. To reject the Son is to reject that forgiveness.
It comes at a cost. EVERYTHING you evil heart desires must be abandoned.
And there will be days that you wish you had those things back. And it is hard, and exhausting and the only way you will make it is when you are at the end of your rope, you reach out to Christ.
But if you endure, you will realize it is real and it’s worth it.
40 to 60% relapse rate
Opioids 91%
Do you know why?
Sobriety sucks. Life is hard.
