INTRODUCTION
(ILL) 3 boys…3 PK…Johnny when he was young…could not come one Sunday b/c he was sick…really wanted to go…I thought he was spiritual…I can do anything I want at church b/c I am the preacher’s son
He did not get that from us…there is a sense of sonship being a very powerful thing
Names of Jesus…there are 24 of them that we are looking at…we are only doing 2-3 at a time when I have a break
Jesus knew who He was and whose He was…look at the SON titles of Jesus…there are many and we are going to look at 3…son of Joseph…Mary…Man…God…beloved son…only begotten son…most high God…what was the first son title used of Jesus in the NT = SON OF DAVID
Matthew 1:1 (NIV)
1 This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
There are going to be a lot of Scriptures this morning…they are all listed on the outline
The Gospel writers (Matt.) wanted to make sure that everyone knew that JC was the rightful heir to the throne of David
Matthew begins his account with Jesus’ genealogy b/c he is writing to the Jews…Jesus’ critics never challenged His family line…anyone who is going to be king must prove his genealogy…it must have been checked the records…Jesus was a physical descendant from David, like it or not…He is the last person that can claim the throne of David Why is this important?
THE MESSIAH HAD TO BE THE FULFILLED PROMISE MADE TO DAVID
2 Samuel 7:16 NIV
16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”
In the OT the throne was taken away…the MESS is going to restore the throne of David…in the Prophets the MESS is often called David…they did not think David would be raised from the dead but the MESS would be the next David and keep God’s promise alive
JER. 30:9 EZK. 34:23-24 HOSEA 3:5
Jeremiah 30:9 NIV
9 Instead, they will serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
Ezekiel 34:23–24 NIV
23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.
Hosea 3:5 NIV
5 Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.
Son of David is used 15X of Jesus in the Gospels is the equivalent to Messiah or Christ
When you say Son of David then you are really saying Messiah
THE REACTION OF HIS ENEMIES
The Jewish leaders got really annoyed when Jesus was called Son of David…you can call Him prophet…teacher…Rabbi…but call Him Son of David and that gets them angry
Matthew 12:22–24 NIV
22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”
This was very dangerous for them to say this…Jesus called it blasphemy of the HS
MATT. 21:9,15
Matthew 21:15 NIV
15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
Matthew is forcing us to ask the question…does Jesus deserve the title Son of David…the King of the Jews
MATT. 2:1-2 MATT. 27:11
Matthew 27:11 NIV
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
Matthew 2:1–2 NIV
1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
If Jesus had said no…I am a prophet or Rabbi…there would have been no cross…that wasn’t the issue…are you saying that you are going to restore the Throne of David
He did not look much like a king the rest of the chapter
MATT. 27:28-29 , 41-42
Matthew 27:28–29 NIV
28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.
Matthew 27:41–42 NIV
41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
“King of Israel”…not an exclamation point but a question mark…they looked at this beaten weak man…he is a king?
That is the question that must be answered…you look at the man on the cross…is He a king
John 19:19–22 NIV
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth, the king of the jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
Interesting that the phrase KING OF THE JEWS was chosen to be on the cross…we must all ask…could He be a King We all have to ask…is He really a king
THE REACTION OF OTHERS
LUKE 1:32-33 The angel Gabriel to Mary
Luke 1:32–33 NIV
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
JOHN 1:49 Nathanael
John 1:49 NIV
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
Pilate asked Him “are you a king”
John 18:37 NIV
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
Jesus said I am a king and this is the reason that I was born
Sometimes when PPL would call Him, Christ, He would tell them to not say that…He never rebuked anyone from calling Him SOD
God promised David something big and Jesus was the delivery of that promise 3 ways to view that name
SON OF DAVID SHOWS JESUS WAS HUMAN
One of the first verses in the NT calls Him SOD and also one of the last
Revelation 22:16 NIV
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”
“Offspring”…Jesus humbled Himself and made in human likeness…The God we adore became one of us
Romans 1:3 NIV
3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David,
This might not be a big deal to us…but to the NT Jew it was a huge deal to be a physical descendant of David
2 Timothy 2:8 NIV
8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel,
Central to Paul’s Gospel was the RESS and SOD…the legitimate answer to every promise that God has made
Why would the King do such a thing…we cannot humble Him…He humbled Himself
(ILL) The Prince and the Pauper…the guy on the throne and the peasant looked alike and they traded places…the king learned what his subjects lives were like by being one of them
He knows what it is like to be us…what we go through…God came near…we do not serve a God that is far away…He is not distant…He lived with us
SON OF DAVID SHOWS THAT JESUS WAS AND IS KING
He was a man with a mission and that was to establish the Kingdom of God.
The reason He was born was to be a king
We are blessed to be in USA and we are free…Jesus did not come to bring a democracy…He came to bring a change of rulers
Matthew 4:17 NIV
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
This was His thesis or theme sentence…this summed it all up
The heart of His preaching was to embrace the rule of God…not democracy…change allegiance from one king to another king
We must repent not b/c the Kingdom will come but b/c it has already come…God’s rule is here right now
All PPL will acknowledge Jesus as King…everyone will meet the KOG…all PPL will be judged according to how he/she recognizes King Jesus
(ILL) I read a story about a plainly dressed man who went into a church in the Netherlands one Sunday and took a seat near the pulpit. Soon, a woman came along and curtly told the man that he was seated in her seat. She then asked him to leave the seat. The man apologized and apparently moved away to a pew reserved for the poor, from where he took part in the service. When the service ended, a friend of the woman came over and asked her if she knew whom she had ordered out of her seat. The woman replied casually that she didn’t know who it was. To her great dismay, she was informed, “It was King Oscar of Sweden!”
A lot of PPL say…God is not close…He is not near…He doesn’t care about me…the part of the problem is we tell the king where He can sit and not sit
“Your Kingdom come”…what I want most God is for Jesus to rule me more completely than He ever has
Jesus says that rule can increase everyday if we will follow Him
Jesus was born in the time of King Herod…there will always be a Herod…there will always be something or someone wanting to sit on the throne of your heart
Your heart will always be a battlefield for competing kingdoms
The Wise Men as they go to see baby Jesus call Herod, king 3 times but after seeing Jesus, Herod is never called a king again
I acknowledge that you have the right to rule my life…Jesus was born King b/c He was King before He was born
What is Jesus’ true and eternal identity?
Matthew 22:41–45 NIV
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”
He is the SOD by His humanity but He is the Lord of David by being God
Christ was King before David was born…He was the root and offspring of David
He will always be King…the question is…will you bend your knee to the King right now or will you wait until the end In
Matthew there are 2 different stories about blind men by the road…have mercy on me SOD…blind men can see the royalty but men with sight cannot
The criminal on the cross was dying…everyone else was mocking and cursing…covered with spit and blood…you call Him king, He can’t save Himself…remember me when you come into your Kingdom
He could see the King on a cross…what do you see…that is the question that most be answered…He did not look like a king but He is and always will be
Everyone will see it one day…all will acknowledge but not all will be saved
The Good News…Jesus is sovereign and savior…repent for the Kingdom is here and the King is here…He was King before He was a savior and He will be King after the saving is finished
(ILL) The tale goes, tired of his follower’s vain flattery and persistence of his god-like status, he decided once and for all to prove who the true God is, that they should revere Him and set aside their love of the crown over Christ. When he was at the height of his ascendancy, he ordered his royal throne to be placed on the shore as the tide was coming in. King Canute then said to the rising tide, ‘You are subject to me, as the land on which I am sitting is mine, and no one has ever resisted me. I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to presume to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.’ But the waters came up as usual, and disrespectfully drenched the king and his fine expensive clothing.
Canute cried, ‘Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty and worthless, and there is no king worthy of the name save Him by whose will heaven, earth and sea obey eternal laws. He who causes the sea to rise is the right and proper person to place one’s trust in and to honour. He is a just and virtuous king, whereas I am a miserable wretch. I am a mere mortal, whereas He is everlasting.
Thereafter King Canute never wore his royal golden crown, but placed it on the image of the crucified Lord, in eternal praise of God – The one great King.
