Intro

We are answering the question “Who is Jesus?”
Major theme: Jesus calls us into discipleship through a relationship with Him.
Last week we saw Jesus travel to the area of the Decapolis (a Roman area inhabited by gentiles)
This week we see Jesus heading back from the Decapolis to the Jewish region of Galilee

PRAY

Before we dive in it’s important to understand that tonight we are going to read two stories that are broken up in a very interesting way.
Remember last week when I told you that repetition has great meaning in scripture.
Well often times in Mark we see this way of writing that sandwiches one story in between another story.
For instance:
In the story of Jesus cursing the fig tree we see Jesus walk past a fig tree that isn’t producing fruit
He then curses the tree and the next scene we see is Jesus cleansing the temple of the money changers
After Jesus cleanses the temple they walk past the tree again and see that it had withered and died
The story of the fig tree not producing fruit helps to give light to the story of Jesus cleansing the temple.
This method of sandwiching one story into another story is often to highlight an important point about both stories
Tonight these two stories are used together to bring a greater meaning to the message that Mark is trying to convey.
But what is the major theme for tonight? What is it that was so important that Mark would tell us in two stories instead of one?
Answer: Have faith through the process
No matter what you are going through, what you are struggling with I want to encourage you to have faith in Jesus.
At summer camp Mason King talked a lot about the idea that being a Christian or having faith in Jesus is something that will require all of your life, for all of your life.
Meaning that the life you live as a believer will be filled with ups and downs, difficult times and also really amazing moments with the Lord.
Faith is a process where you become saved through your faith in Jesus but then you begin the process of Sanctification where you are changed and transformed throughout the rest of your life to think and behave more and more like Jesus.
So that you may point others to salvation in Him.
It’s a process though
Not one Christian has ever placed their faith in Jesus and immediately become the most wise and righteous believer to ever walk the face of this Earth.
You spend your lives growing and transforming as believers into who God has called you to exemplify which is Jesus Christ.
So as we study God’s word together tonight I want you to keep that statement in mind: Trust God Through the Process
Mark 5:21–23 ESV
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. 22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet 23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
So remember last week they crossed the Sea of Galilee to go from the Jewish region to the Roman region called the Decapolis and now we see Jesus crossing back over to the Jewish region of Galilee.
And once again we see a great crowd following Jesus
Now we have talked about this great crowd here for many weeks and tonight I want to point out that Jesus was never concerned with how many people followed Him but instead by who placed their faith in Him.
One of those people is Jairus who was a ruler of the synagogue.
Most times we see the religious rulers in Israel being hostile towards Jesus
People like the scribes and pharisees often are seen in a very bad light because of their lack of faith in Jesus but here we see a religious leader of the day come and bow at Jesus feet and place his faith in Christ to heal his daughter.
Mark 5:23 ESV
23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
We see this faith in Jairus that Jesus can heal his daughter even though she is close to dying and we see Jesus respond to this request.
In the midst of this great crowd Jesus follows this man because he placed his faith in Jesus
So Jesus begins following Jairus and the crowds go with Him following after Jesus and pushing in around Jesus
Mark 5:24 ESV
24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.
Have y’all ever been in a crowded place?
Like at a concert or at a game and people are pushing against you.
I hate it!!!
You know what I hate most is when you are in a crowded place and someone’s sweaty arm brushes up against yours.
DISGUSTING!!!
But this is where Jesus is at, the crowds are pushing all around Him as He is following Jairus to His house no doubt they were following Jesus because they wanted to see another miracle.
Remember that up to this point the crowds have followed and watched Jesus perform many miracles and it had become well known that Jesus had the power to heal all who came to Him
And as we see Jesus heal He declares that it is because faith that they have been healed.
Faith in Christ.
One of these people we see appear in verse 25
Mark 5:25–28 ESV
25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
We started tonight by saying Trust God through the process.
Two things to say about this when we think about trusting God through the process.
Trust does not equal immediate healing
And God does not operate on what we think is best
Take this woman for example.
Twelve years she had been sick.
Not only this but in the Jewish culture and tradition and by Jewish law she was seen as unclean which would have meant she was a social outcast.
People would not have spent time with her or engaged with her
If she was Jewish she would not have been welcomed into the temple to worship
And she had spent all her money on doctors and suffered much pain to try and fix this issue and instead of getting better she got worse!
Imagine the utter desperation she was in.
And finally after trying to do it herself for all these years she hears of a man who might be able to save her
To relieve her of the pain she is in both physically and socially
But notice what she says in verse 28
“If I touch even His garments, I will be made well”
See she thought that it was something physical about Jesus
If I can touch Him, even His garment if I can just touch Jesus
What she didn’t understand is that it isn’t about encountering Jesus physically it’s about encountering Jesus through Faith.
It was her faith that made her well not because she touched Jesus garment.
Mark 5:30–34 ESV
30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 And he looked around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
What I love about this passage is Jesus is not mad that she approached Him.
He’s not upset that His power was used in this way.
Instead He feels the power He holds heal this woman and immediately He begins to look for the one person in a crowd of thousands who had faith in Him.
He desires to see her, He desires to know who she is.
For you tonight, if you have never encountered Jesus Christ He desires to have a relationship with you.
The Creator of the Universe desires to spend time with you, His creation.
And when this woman comes forward and tells Jesus what happened He calls her daughter, and he says your FAITH has made you well.
Not her touching a cloak or some magical word but instead the faith of a woman who would believe that Jesus could save her from her sickness.
Because of her faith in Jesus she was healed.
Do you remember what is happening here in this story?
There are two stories happening at once remember?
Jairus daughter is still dying and here Jesus has taken time out of His walk to Jairus house to talk with this woman.
Imagine being where Jairus is right now.
Imagine you have come to Jesus and told Him your mom was dying and as you are walking with Him to your house He stops and talks with someone who was just healed!
Imagine how frustrated you might be or impatient.
Jesus, you need to solve MY issue NOW!
Jesus even calls this woman daughter, meanwhile Jairus daughter is almost dead!
Mark 5:35 ESV
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
I don’t like inserting ourselves into the Bible very much as like one of the characters but think many times we might feel like we are at this place where Jairus is at.
We have gone to Jesus, we think things are going well, and then we experience a setback
or we experience a failure or a loss and it can be so easy for us to so quickly feel defeated
This is what it looks like to trust God through the process.
It might not happen when you want it to or how you want it to but God will always come through for you.
It’s experiencing a setback or a failure and turning to Jesus and saying I trust you.
Mark 5:36 ESV
36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Jairus hears his daughter is dead and Jesus tells Jairus
Don’t be afraid, only believe
Jesus is telling Jairus
Believe in who I am, have faith in me.
This whole passage is boiled down to this phrase here.
Do not fear, only believe.
As we trust God through the process we realize that He has been with us all along
He is with you in the pain and in the struggle and he is with you in times of joy too.
Mark 5:37–43 ESV
37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
When you trust God through the process you will be amazed by what He can do with what you thought was impossible.
I don’t know about you but often times when I am struggling with something or when I am going through something tough I can often times laugh like these people in the story thinking that it’s impossible to get through what I’m going through.
But as we continue to turn to the Lord with our fear and run to Him with our pain we find that what is impossible for man is possible for God.
And all He is asking you to do is have faith in Him through the process and glorify Him when He does the impossible.
