Therefore there is a healthy suspicion of human authority (see Saul)
7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
8 The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us.’
9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us.’
11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’
12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us.’
13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’
14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us.’
15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.’

Biblically authority is the responsibility to care for some sphere, person, or group in order to bring benefit to them.

Authority from Creation - To Feed and Flourish
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Spread this around the globe… Show how benevolent care is better than chaos
Need a helper
Bring someone up into involvement - agency
4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
- Sin.. Satan’s plan is to use authority to steal our faith in God
Authority from Redemption - To Sacrifice and Share
Authority from Redemption - To Sacrifice and Share
Christ came and used His authority to restore our faith in God
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Therefore in the church we are using our authority to fulfill Christ’s mission and be like Christ
1 TImothy 1:5
5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
Outline of 2 Timothy
Don’t be ashamed but share in suffering
Be strengthened in grace
Do what God wants you to do
Cling to the authority of Scripture without being quarrelsome
Negative examples - suffering doesn’t matter, living under God’s rule isn’t that important
Your life and your teaching matter
Proclaim the Word
1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Command authority vs Counsel Authority
Jonathan Leeman
Good authority is not unaccountable but submits to a higher authority.
Good authority doesn’t steal life; it creates it.
Good authority is not unteachable, but seeks wisdom.
Good authority is not self-protective but vulnerable as it seeks to obey God.
Community Group questions;
Where do you bristle against authority and why?
What benefits do the authorities in your life bring?
How can we appreciate the authorities in our lives?
How do we develop ourselves as good authorities?
What men do you think God is grooming into elders in the church?
How could you encourage them?
