1 Corinthians 3:16–17 NKJV
16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.
To Paul the Church (people) very temple of God because it was the society in which the very spirit of God dwelt
WE have to make room for nothing else but his Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 7:1 NKJV
1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Holiness is perfected in the fear of the Lord
Isaiah 11:1–3 NKJV
1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 3 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
What we do builds or defiles the temple
Depending on what you do with your temple
Do not grieve/quench the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 4:30-32 NKJV
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”
Romans 6:1-4
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
I Thessalonians 5:16-19 NKJV
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.”
Quenching the Holy Spirit is not grieving it:
The word quenching there in the Greek means to put out or extinguish
Like a fire
Quenching the Holy Spirit is when you dam up the flow of the spirit in your life
That’s why it’s important to keep being filled in the spirit
It’s also important to move as the spirit wills
Listen for the Holy Spirit to guide you
The spirit isn’t going to lead you down the wrong path
The spirit won’t tell you anything contrary to Gods word:
Can be warnings
Words for people
Leading by peace
It’s important to keep an open flow in our lives:
You allow the flow of the world in your life through the information you get
We get the flow of the spirit in our lives by the word of God
What it all comes down to is a renewed mind
Grieving the Holy spirit is Defiling:
As soon as bitterness, hatred unforgiveness enters the temple love goes with it
“The very badge of the church is love for the community”
The crazier the community, the deeper the compassion has to be
Jesus was moved/led by compassion
Defiling your temple look likes an absence of Love
1 Corinthians 13:1–13 NKJV
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
The Spirit of God cannot exist where Love is not present because it cannot be seperated
1 Corinthians 3:18–22 NKJV
18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 21 Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours.
Paul goes on to pin down the root cause of dissension and the consequent destruction of the Church
It is the Worship of intellectual and worldly wisdom!
Job 5:13 NKJV
13 He catches the wise in their own craftiness, And the counsel of the cunning comes quickly upon them.
Psalm 94:11 NKJV
11 The Lord knows the thoughts of man, That they are futile.
The pride of the Human mind which makes us evaluate and correct according to human rationale rather than spiritual understanding
Intellectual pride:
Always argumentative:
it cannot keep silent and admire; it must talk and criticize
it cannot bear to have it’s opinions contradicted; it must prove that it and it alone is right
It’s never humble enough to learn
Intellectual pride is exclusive
Intellectual pride tends to look down on others rather than sit down beside them(JESUS EXAMPLE)
Stephen warned about it
Acts 7:44–54 NKJV
44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, 45 which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David, 46 who found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. 47 But Solomon built Him a house. 48 “However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: 49Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, Or what is the place of My rest? 50 Has My hand not made all these things?’ 51You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.” 54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
Be humble enough to accept and receive the Holy Spirit
A roman teacher Quintilian said of certain students “They would doubtless have become excellent scholars if they had not been so fully persuaded of their own scholarship”
