The Way the Truth the Life Sermon
John 14:1–6 CSB
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going.” “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
So, we pick up in Chapter 14 with Jesus telling the disciples to Not Let Their Heart's Be Troubled.
Don't let your heart be troubled is what Jesus tells the disciples right after He's just told them that one of them is going to betray Him… and that all of them would deny Him… and that He was going to leave them that night.
If there was ever a time to have a troubled heart, it would be then. Yet Jesus is telling them Let not your heart be troubled! Jesus tells them let not your heart be troubled and then He tells them How to Accomplish not being troubled, which is to believe in God the Father and also believe in Him.
This is another time where Jesus is saying I and my Father are One! Believe in God the Father and also believe in Me!
What separates Him from all other religious teachers is that He Tells the World to Believe in Him.
We all know the reason He can say that is because He is God! He's speaking to the disciples here, but we can take Jesus' advice for ourselves, whenever we have reason to have a troubled heart… we must believe on God the Father and Jesus the Son.
Believe in what Jesus tells them next… that heaven isn't a fairytale…it isn't a metaphor. Heaven is for real!
In the Jewish custom, when a man got married, his father would build rooms onto the house for the newly married son. As we know, we the church are the Bride of Christ… so what Jesus is telling them is that “Yes I'm going away, but I'm not abandoning you. I’m going to prepare a place for you and then I’m coming back to get you so that you may be where I am.” Also, and on top of all of that, you know the way to where I'm going anyway!
We think of the way in the context of a path, but the way is a person! So, Thomas, being confused, says “Uh Jesus, we don't know where you're goin,g so how can we know the way for us to get there?”
What Jesus says next is amazing on so many levels! Jesus says “I Am the Way, the Truth and The Life”. No one comes to the Father except through Me!
Jesus is the way to heaven…
He's the way to God the Father…
He's the way to Peace…
He's the way to becoming an overcomer…
He's the way to life and life more abundantly…
He's the way to holiness…
He's the way to righteousness…
He's the way to loving your neighbors…
He's the way to an eternal life instead of eternal death…
He's the way - not A way THE way.
1 Timothy 2:5 CSB
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
tells us “For there is one God and one mediator between God and humanity… Christ Jesus.
When he says no one comes to the Father except through me, He's saying, “I'm the way for you to talk to the Father”.
When Jesus said “Our Father who is in heaven”, He was saying that when we pray, He takes our prayers to the Father and they discuss our prayers, thus making Jesus the Way to the father. We can only get access to heaven through Jesus.
The Father lives in heaven, so Jesus is the Way to eternity in heaven with our Father. So when Jesus says He's the Way, He meant all of these things and much, much more!
When you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior… and The Way… you then begin to understand that He's not a truth, He IS the Truth! He's the truth that exposes all other lies.
John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In Him was life and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness and yet the darkness did not overcome it.”
John 1:1–5 CSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
Truth is rooted in the eternal God who’s all powerful and unchangeable. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your Word is truth.””
John 17:17 “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
John 17:17 CSB
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
Truth is far more than facts. It’s not just something we act upon. It acts upon us. We can’t change the truth, but the truth can change us. It sanctifies (sets us apart) from the falsehoods woven into our sin natures.
As Christ the Living Word is truth, so His written word is truth. Though heaven and earth will pass away, God’s truth never will.
Over half the New Testament uses of “truth”are in John’s gospel. Truth is reality…it’s the way things really are. What seems to be and what really is are often not the same. To know the truth is to see accurately. To believe what isn’t true is to be blind.
God has written His truth on human hearts, in the conscience (Romans 2:15 “They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts. Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts either accuse or even excuse them”
. Conviction and a twinge of the conscience come from a recognition that truth has been violated.
When the world hears truth, if spoken graciously, many are drawn to it by the moral vacuum they feel. the heart longs for truth—even the heart that rejects it.
As followers of Christ, we are to walk in the Truth! We are to believe in the Truth… Walk in the Truth and speak the Truth!
When we give our lives to Jesus, the Way we believe and Trust in Jesus, the Truth, and we receive the gift of Jesus the Life!
That last part of John 1 scripture we read said that in Jesus was life. Jesus is life, He came down out of heaven not only to make bad people good, but to make dead people alive!
When you live for Jesus He is the way to eternal life. Like I said earlier… that life living inside of us is the source of the light people see in us!
There are so many scriptures about Jesus being the life! When you understand what Jesus said in John 14 you have everything you need to know your prayers are taken to God the Father and you live for the only Way to heaven… you know the only Truth that is ultimate Truth… and you are capable of spotting anything outside of the Truth. You have a gift that you can only get from Jesus, which is the eternal life.
So all Jesus said was I Am the Way the Truth and the Life but what that means is an entire way of life and life in abundance!
Birth (Coming Forth) of Christ
Proverbs 8:22 Jesus Comes Forth From the Father: The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; 23 I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. 24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; 25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, 26 before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth. 27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizonon the face of the deep, 28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, 29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth. 30Then I was constantly[e] at his side I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, 31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. “Now then, my children, listen to me; blessed are) those who keep my ways. 33 Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. 34 Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. 35 For those who find me find life and receive favor from the Lord. 36 But those who fail to find me harm themselves; all who hate me love death.”
