Our text is found in the book of the Prophecy of Daniel. Daniel Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are indentured servants in Babylon. The Children of Israel were slaves. They were bound to serve the King of Babylon, who was Nebuchadnezzar at the time. Neb creates a golden statute of himself and requires that everyone bow when they hear the sound of the music. When the music played whoever does not bow, will be cast into the fiery furnace. When the music played, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow. This caused them to be placed in a view of King Nebuchadnezzar who upon giving them another chance to bow, declared that if they did not, he would turn the heat up 7 times. S, M, and A, still refused. They were cast into the fiery furnace, which was so hot that it killed the men that threw them in. Yet, upon looking into the furnace, convinced that he had made a good example of S, M, and A, Neb was surprised to see that the fiery furnace that killed his own men was not successful at killing those boys.
