This passage means so much to me as it is
the first chapter in the Bible I taught
and it was the one that called me into ministry.
When I first taught it
Megan who i dont think we were dating yet in late 2010
happened to be the guest worship that day.
I played the box with her then taught
and I remember thinking I can get used to this
I remember feeling this is the start to something more.
After I taught 2 timothy 2
the guinea pigs said they can see me being a pastor
and that was a major change to the plan I had made in my life
I was studying, and planning to be a firefighter
I had wanted to be one my whole life.
But I made myself open to that possible call of God
and I would see 2 timothy 2:15 every where
I would hear people quoting it around me
I would see it posted in places
I went on a missions trip I remember seeing it
in the classrooms where we would serve.
After the missions trip I said God do what you want with me
and I remember in a time of prayer for what direction to take my life
God said you can be a fire fighter and save lives but they may die the next day
or you can saves souls from the fire of hell.
That night I wrote down, God whatever you want me to do I will do it.
Then I had a dream that night where Megan jumped up from a couch and said
you are going to be a pastor
I told my family
and it shocked my family
and I had an event at the church i was going to attend and so
I also am in shock ofr this new direction I am going to take in my life
get in the car and
on the radio
it said if you are called to ministry
the Lord will provide
and then their was an ad for Bible college and it said
2 Tim 2 :15.
So I saved enough money for 1 year of Bible college. a 2 year program
trusting the Lord.
He ended up through different ways each semester
without me ever asking people or programs for help
paying for 3 of my 4 semester
I felt the call to be there.
and so I wanted to take my time their seriously so my
plan was to be at the libray more than any one else before.
where at the door of the library was a plaque of 2 tim 2:15 that reminded me of this call to study His Word.
to prepare for my future church
I spent between 8-12 sometimes 15 hours each day at that library studying every semester.
Where I met Brian in the library to which he could attest to seeing me in the library alot.
In that time at CCBC I would be affiredof my call with this verse through
books and messages.
After CCBC
people were all getting interniships
and I just felt that God called me so He will send me where to go.
To which the senior pastor of my home church called me
and hired me
where I oversaw several ministries
trained to be a swiss army knife there
started and ran my own bible college
got married to MEgan
and became a High School pastor
and an assistant pastor.
I learned so much in my 10 years there
I have held on to this verse to remind me of my call
to ministry but also knew it was equipping me to being a senior pastor
where I felt that I didnt need to seek and look for where.
but God would send me when the time was right.
To where I was brought to you.
and where just a couple weeks ago
pastor Dale
before all of you
read to me 2 timothy 2:15 to commission me
to serve as senior pastor
So with you I got to see God’s call answered.
and it is my joy to
get to share with you 2 Timothy 2.
Turn to 2 Timothy 2
This letter was written by Paul to Timothy
to equip Him for his ministry.
This is concidered the last book Paul writes.
Its almost this passing baton to Timothy
Who Paul siad in Philippians 2:20 that no one is like minded with him
like TImothy was
As it will be for all the generations to come
that our church has just expereinced
this was a time to equip the next generation
and so here is this amazing charge from Paul
to Timothy
So Paul is saying things like
13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Holdfast Timothy,
Be strong Timothy
Why because the attacks are coming
persecutation is coming
The wolves are amongst you
and they want to take God’s sheep from the truth
13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
Timothy cant be timid any more
He needs to stand firm on God’s Word
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
Timothy needs to speak up
He cant let people take control
He cant let people twist the truth.
So that is the message of 2 Timothy
knowing that lets read 2 timothy 2:14
2 Timothy 2:14 (NKJV)
14 Remind them of these things...
what things?
the things that he later calls in verse
this “remind” is connect to remember in verse 8
8 Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel,
he also gives this faithful saying
for Timothy 2 hold onto.
11 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. 12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
those who deny Jesus will be denied by God.
if we are with Jesus in faith then He is faithful to His promise that we will live with Him.
So Paul’s exhortation to Timothy here is:
Remind them of Jesus,
and the promises in Christ.
Lets keep reading the rest of verse 14
14 Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
What Paul is referring to of not “strive of words to no profit”
is mentioned again in verse 16
16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
So Paul is refering to a straying from the truth.
the example that Paul gives is from a couple guys named Hymenaeus & Philetus
they were saying the resurrection is already past.
So even in the early church their were teachings, things people were saying that were straying from the truth.
Dont think well its not like that now… Paul actually points out that will get worse
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
So we need to be careful of any teaching, message, movement,
that seeks to changes denies, or reduce
Who Jesus is, what He did, and His promises.
So Paul says it is:
to no profit (v.14)
profane (v.16)
idle babblings (v.16)
Paul warns
it overthrows the faith of some (v.18)
it increases to more ungodliness (v.16)
the messages spread like cancer (v.17)
to ruin of the hears (v.14)
we think not us. its not happening.
Yes it is. Its all around us.
We have to be careful within our own church
Someone may come in wit a bunch of verses
trying to convince of something to believe, or do.
and if we have to be careful here
There is a lot to be careful of out there.
Everyone wants to think I wont fall for it.
But many fall into its traps
as it may appeal to the mind
it may appeal to the flesh
to our pride.
Paul says it spreads like cancer for a reason.
It ruins the hears of it because it takes them away
from that simplicty beauty faith like a child. joy.
it complicates, maybe tries to add to grace
Paul charges Timothy to:
charge the church to not strive about these words (v.14)
& to shun it (v.16)
dont give it the attention it wants.
it wants to spread like cancer.
just shut it up.
the word for strive here also can be translated to fight over, to argue
sometimes when you argue
even if you are right are just giving
that teaching legs
to make more people aware of it
to be confused
Paul is saying
dont give it legs to run.
Shut it up and now instead of talking about
how wrong it is is or argueing or whatever
and instead do what He says in verse 15
So from this we get the positive action in 2 timothy 2:15
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
15 Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.
So shun the words and encourae the people to not strive in it
but you keep yourself approved to God.
you dont need to please people
you dont need their approval
If you are a workman approved to God
it doesnt matter what people think
it doesnt matter what people are approving of
you know that you and God are on same page.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God
this means its takes work
it means you are seeking His approval
not for salvation but for doctrine.
we can be ashamed in not doing the work
we can be ashamed in not being diligent in it.
What is the work to present to God?
rightly dividing the word of truth.
this means there is a way to divide His Word:
a right way and a wrong way
Paul gave an example of a couple people
dividing it the wrong way
people can divide it in the wrong way
by ignorance,
by trying to make the Word say what they want it to say.
so they cut up the Word to avoid the parts they dont want
by seeking to harm and destroy the faith of others.
they want to ruin the faith
so they will cut up the Word to lead others to lose faith
to doubt God.
Rightly dividing the Word
is teaching the whole council of God
not avoiding anything.
not taking away anything
not adding anything
I love what Paul says in verse 19
2 Timothy 2:19 (NKJV)
19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands...
God’s solid foundation
it means it doesn't change
it doesn't fall apart
it doesn't need anything added to support it.
So we get an exhortation
dont let any teaching take us from Jesus, who He is, what He did, and His promises.
to stand on God’s solid foundation
Dilligently seeking to present yourself approved to God not others.
Correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching the Word.
Ultimately, the message from 2 Timothy 2:14-19 encourages believers to maintain a strong, grounded faith, pursue unity in our church that is committed to the truth of God's Word while avoiding divisive arguments and false teachings.
