Introduction

Being patient in the midst of chaos is one of the most challenging tasks in our life. The key to war is the fact that everyone has a part to play. The goal in war is to win and understand where refuge and salvation comes from. This psalm of David was written for the choir director Jeduthun. When we think of R&B and those who sing songs we thing of romance, soft and love songs. During biblical times many of these praise leaders where warriors. Jeduthun was a part of a priestly Levitical family who presided over the music in the sanctuary in David’s reign.
1 Chronicles 25:1 “Moreover David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals. And the number of the skilled men performing their service was:”
2 Chronicles 5:12 “and the Levites who were the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, and with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets—”
Not only where they warriors but they were set a part to prophesy. The bible dictates their father as the King’s Seer 2 Chronicles 35:15 “And the singers, the sons of Asaph, were in their places, according to the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer. Also the gatekeepers were at each gate; they did not have to leave their position, because their brethren the Levites prepared portions for them.”
These men were protectors! If you watched the Game of Thrones like I did this was similar to the hand of the King. They were the right hand man, they helped make the plans. Everyone has a position in war. Beloved, we are all fighting in the same war. Understand these men were gatekeepers! That took bravery, and if you want to protect the gate you are going to have to be prepared to defend at all cost! No matter the position you have be ready to fight! As a leader we must understand that we must trust God by example because everyone assembled in the holy place is hanging in the balance admittance and impending divine judgement. Our duty is to address and instruct the community that is assembled here today to have the tools to fight properly but also find refuge in God.

Waiting in the Midst of the Battle

When we are in a war torn place in life, we have to wait on the Lord. Understand that the future might look bleak but understand that God always shows up at the right time. Waiting on God does not mean being idle, but just know that waiting is sometimes harder than working. Understand that patience is meaningful in the sense of what it spiritually produces!
Wait Silently
It’s not everyone’s business of what you are waiting on. All trials aren’t meant to be told. Understand that everyone isn’t listening to your story to help. Sometimes people are listening to your trial to expose you! Sometimes we don’t need to make noise. Sometimes all that talking is evidence of little faith.
“Truly my soul silently waits on for God”
I like what the CSB version states, “I am at rest in God alone”.
If you are looking for refuge or protection in any one else but God you are looking at the wrong resource.
God’s protection never fails, look at the dynamic of ministry. David’s psalm is evident that we all need encouragement. Typically we are encouraged by songs, but David is encouraging the people that are appointed to help him and see the things that he is missing.
It’s a testament of what type of people you need around you. You need some people that have the ability to look out for your blind spots. Sometimes I need to be reminded that my salvation in all of life’s circumstances comes from God. Sometimes we have to be silent, that word silent as it pertains to wait silently means to not make a sound. All plans are meant to be broadcast. This silence does something spectacular. It provides relief from trouble with the implication of being in the right relationship with God. There is peace in this type of silence, this is not just being quiet but the ability to rest within the power of God! I can rest because I know that my salvation comes from the Lord. I’m not worried about the oppressor or the enemy because I know that the salvation of God always is victorious!
When you know you have the victory you don’t have to do all that talking. When I know who holds the power, I don’t have to say much because God has my back.

Wait Expectantly

When I was a kid there was no raffle or text message that told you the new Jordan’s were coming out. We would flip through an Eastbay magazine to see when the expected drop dates were. There were people that showed up at the sneaker shop hoping they had some left and there were those like my college roommate that would show up the night before prepared to spend the night in a lawn chair outside the store expecting to walk out with the brand new shoes.
To many of us are showing up to battle late hoping God has a gameplan for us when in all actuality we should be prepared and waiting expectantly for our victory.
God will work for us as we trust Him and surrender to his will and his way. Understand your hope is not in material things but in the power of God. We put too much effort into trusting things that are fail proof! God has never lost a battle, God has never lost a fight we just have to show up prepared. Sometimes battles take long nights, weeks and even years but as long as we are prepared God will handle the rest.
There is no plan B with God. There’s only A plan and that plan is His plan. This is why David could write “He ONLY is my rock and my salvation, He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
When my cross is heavy I shall not be moved, like a tree that’s planted by the water I shall not be moved. Jesus is our captain I shall not be moved, like a tree that’s planted by the water I shall not be moved.
I shall not be moved! What does it mean for God to be my salvation. He’s my safety, my rescue, my deliverer, in Him I have safety! I shall not be moved.
Psalm 42:6 “O my God, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, And from the heights of Hermon, From the Hill Mizar.”
Psalm 62:2 “He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.”
Exodus 14:13 “And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.”
He is my strong tower! He is my light in a dark place! He is my safety net! He is my captain, in Him I have the victory!
I like that word moved, because it doesn’t mean that God won’t put me somewhere else. It means that no matter what life throws at me I will not be shaken! I will not be afraid!
Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”

Suppose there is a fire in the upper section of a house. As the people gather in the street below, a child is seen at the window of a room next to the fire. The fire trucks are at least five minutes away and so will be too late to help. How is the child to escape?

Now suppose that in the neighborhood lives a large man, well known for his strength and athletic ability. He arrives at the scene and shouts to the child, “Drop into my arms. Don’t be afraid. I’ll catch you.”

It is one part of faith for the child to know that the man is there. It is another part of faith to believe that the man is strong and able to catch someone. But the essence of faith lies in his dropping down into the man’s arms.451

Some of our lives are in a place of destruction not because things are burning down below us but because we are afraid to jump in the arms of God who is standing there waiting on us to jump! If you want salvation from the burning buildings of life sometimes you are going to have to trust the resource at the bottom of that leap! God isn’t standing there for you to fail, He’s standing there to rescue you, all you have to is jump! It’s similar to a little child that jumps off of a stair case, the child knows that it is safe in the arms of him or her that is strong enough to catch them. No matter what is going on in your life God is strong enough to catch you!
