Intro
Matthew 3:1-6.
Verse 1-
Explain who John the Baptist is and what we already know of him. Explain this wilderness area is the desert.
Verse 2
Explain Kingdom of Heaven
Verse 3
Explain how John was thought to be Elijah and w hat his role was . How he fulfilled prophecies.
Verse 4
Explain how this is like Elijah but was common for people living in the desert.
Verses 5-6
A lot of people going to be baptized
Baptism by immersion
baptism seemed to be common for people in Judiasm for converts, but not for people already Jewish.
Transition: There seems to be genuine excitement surrounding what John is doing. I mean, people were going into the wilderness to see what a man in weird clothes was doing. But John was not welcoming to everyone we will see.
Matthew 3:7-12.
Verse 7 Explain a little about both sects and why he called them a viper
Verse 8
Repentance should be genuine
Verse 9
Explain descendants of Abraham
Explain wordplay
We are all responsible for our true beleif
Verse 10
Genuine belief and life change is required
Verses 11-12
Jesus came to save true believers from judgement, but there will still be judgement
Explain wheat and chaff.
Transition: We see John speak of what the one coming is going to do. He is fulfilling his role of making straight the way for the Lord. He is telling about who is coming. And then, he sees the one he speaks of.
Matthew 3:13-17.
Verses 13-14
John humbly says he should be baptized by Jesus, he has already acknowledged Jesus sinlessness and now Jesus wants him to perform the action associated with repentance.
