Introduction

As I have been working on painting in our lobby this week, I have been able to listen to a lot of music. I listen to worship music and I listen to podcasts, and a lot of times I listen to...... 90s and early 00s country. I love to jam out to classic country and sing until I cant talk anymore. I will match anyone in a Brooks and Dunn karaoke contest and I have video to prove it. and no we arent watching it.
But there was one song that came on by the artist Chris Young and its called Voices. He sings about whispers and voices in his head. Now its not about schizophrenia or someone out of their mind. But its a young man remembering the voices of his parents and grandparents. Their “wise “ sayings. While there are better sayings than this, the song says some like this.
My dad sayin', "Work that job But don't work your life away" And mama tellin' me to drop some cash In the offerin' plate on Sunday And granddad sayin', "You can have a few But don't ever cross that line" Yeah, I hear voices all the time
My dad sayin', "Quit that team And you'd be a quitter for the rest of your life" And mama tellin' me to say a prayer Every time I lay down at night And grandma sayin', "If you find the one You better treat her right" Yeah, I hear voices all the time
The book of proverbs talks a lot about a voice that is crying out to us as a father to his son. There are things, that as long as we live, we shouldnt forget. Phrases, sayings, truths, and principles that we ought to hold on to for as long as we live. We will discuss more next week on this but just as wisdom calls out and is available for everyone. Folly, sin, despair, and wickedness calls out as well.
The opportunity to choose sin over righteousness is there for you and your children. It always has been.
Last night we had some friends over and they had a little 2 year old that was running around and playing and cannon was playing with him. The little 2 year old took his stuffed monkey and hit Cannon as hard as he could and Cannon turned around and I immediately said CANNON, uh uh. He said Dad, I didnt do anything, and I said I know but I also know what you were about to do.
I could hear the voice calling to him to hit him back. I knew it because I know Cannon and I myself am familiar with that voice. But I needed to make sure he heard my voice louder than the voice to get even with that little boy.
Proverbs 5, 6, and 7 Speak about this voice. As we have been grazing the top of Proverbs on Sunday Mornings, I hope you take time to dive slowly during the week. We wont read all or even close to all of 5 6 and 7 but we will look over the main theme and find its application for our lives today.
While there is discussion about several facets of sin, most of these passages speaks about adultery. We have children in our services, and while all scripture is suitable for us, some things should be read and taught to them in a different setting.
Nonetheless we will not avoid this topic.

there are several calls that you must not answer and learn to recognize the caller ID
Lets start at the beginning of chapter 5
RING RING ADULTERY

5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom,

turn your ear to my words of insight,

2 that you may maintain discretion

and your lips may preserve knowledge.

The father, which is wisdom is calling for the son, and asking him to turn his ear to him.
So many people spend so much time trying to search for wisdom. They wish for it and attend classes and seminars. They will go to insane lengths to obtain wisdom. And dont get me wrong. Pursuing wisdom is important, but it is nonetheless readily available. We just dont turn our ears to it.
If you are a believer and disciple of Jesus and your life has been changed by His redeeming work, the Spirit of God lives in you and you know the difference in right and wrong.
Like I cant think of a time, where I have sinned and then I could look and say “well I didnt know it was wrong” . Of course you did. We just convince ourselves and turn our ears away from wisdom.
And how is it that we convince ourselves? Lets keep reading

3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,

and her speech is smoother than oil;

4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,

sharp as a double-edged sword.

Do you know what two of the most valuable belongings one could have in those days was? Honey and oil. The flavor that it would add to anything was phenomenal. The sweetness of the honey was just as it is now but imagine it in a world where not every food and drink is full of corn syrup and sugar. It was the cookies and milk of those days. And oil was necessary for an exquizit meal.
So these two things which are good in their own place are being associated with the adulterous woman. And it kind of makes sense right. If the author said “the lips of the adulterous woman are like pickled beats and her speech is smoother than vinegar” then no man or woman would be caught in adultery. No one would sin.
But thats now how sin works it tastes like chocolate but goes down like maneur. It luers you end by the deception of its sweetness and then ruins you like any sweet. DOnt believe me. go eat a gallon of ice cream and tell me how you feel.
Solomon will continue by saying
go to a path far from her
drink water from your own cisterns

21 For your ways are in full view of the LORD,

and he examines all your paths.

22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;

the cords of their sins hold them fast.

23 For lack of discipline they will die,

led astray by their own great folly

God is watching and he sees
Knox rail salvage
adultery is great sin that you commit against your husband or wife, but not near as much as the offense as it is against God
RING RING LAZINESS

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;

consider its ways and be wise!

7 It has no commander,

no overseer or ruler,

8 yet it stores its provisions in summer

and gathers its food at harvest.

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard?

When will you get up from your sleep?

10 A little sleep, a little slumber,

a little folding of the hands to rest—

11 and poverty will come on you like a thief

and scarcity like an armed man.

RING RING DECEIT

12 A troublemaker and a villain,

who goes about with a corrupt mouth,

13 who winks maliciously with his eye,

signals with his feet

and motions with his fingers,

14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart—

he always stirs up conflict.

15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;

he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.

16 There are six things the LORD hates,

seven that are detestable to him:

17 haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,

feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 a false witness who pours out lies

and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Closing

20 My son, keep your father’s command

and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

21 Bind them always on your heart;

fasten them around your neck.

22 When you walk, they will guide you;

when you sleep, they will watch over you;

when you awake, they will speak to you.

23 For this command is a lamp,

this teaching is a light,

and correction and instruction

are the way to life,

24 keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,

from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.

25 Do not lust in your heart after her beauty

or let her captivate you with her eyes.

What do you value? What you value most is what will dictate which call you answer.
