Investing in our Relationships with Godly Values

Opening Thought | Question:
In this series about “Our Relation to God & Others” – I want to focus on the family relationship and the impact it has on humanity.
Colossians 1:27
1 Thessalonians 2:3-13
Background: After leaving Philippi, Paul went to Thessalonica. In just a few months he was able to create such an intimate and profound relationship with the believers there. He preached, worked, and lived with them. But His time was cut short…
But one of the things he wanted to remind them of was how that intimate relationship was created and given eternal value.
1. Single-mindedness in Purpose
Example:
A 5-star general and their in-house discussions
Scriptures:
“...we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts...” (1 Thessalonians 2:3-6)
"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10)
Application
In our relationships, let's focus on aligning with God's purpose, not shifted by others' opinions. Truly find out what His purpose for creation is
2. Caring Like a Mother
Example: My mother praying for me every week
Scriptures:
“...as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children...” (1 Thessalonians 2:7-8)
"As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem." (Isaiah 66:13)
This is a Heavenly Father trait that He is asking us to adopt
Background: A mother’s touch captures the essence of godly relationships. Their selfless love and nurturing reflect how believers should relate spiritually. Application
Express that 'mom-level' care in your interactions. It might be all about that is needed! Active Listening: When someone talks, really listen. Avoid interrupting or thinking of your response while they speak. Random Acts of Kindness: Send a note, make a call, or do a small favor for someone without expecting anything in return.
3. Living Righteously and Being a Role Model
Example: GAF teenager become a leader story
Scripture: “...how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers...” (1 Thessalonians 2:9-10) & "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity." (Titus 2:7) Discussion: As the world spills its coffee, be the beacon, leading others with integrity and godly values. Application
Stand out, shine bright – The card from the PAIS team Meditation & Prayer: Set aside daily time for reflection on your actions and seeking God’s guidance. Feedback: Occasionally ask close friends or family for feedback on areas you could improve.
4. Guiding Like a Father
Example: My dad asking for forgiveness
Scripture: “...exhorting and encouraging and imploring EACH ONE of you as a father would his own children...” (1 Thessalonians 2:11) & "For the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights." (Proverbs 3:12) Application:
In our own lives, mentors and fatherly figures may not always come in traditional forms or settings. They could be a teacher, a community leader, or even a colleague. What's essential is their influence in molding our beliefs, values, and paths – guiding us through crucial phases of our lives with wisdom and care. Emulate that guidance in relationships, ensuring that those you mentor feel seen, understood, and inspired.
5. Our Way of Living: A Divine Calling
Example: I tried so many different avenues to define my life – It wasn’t until the encounter with our precious Jesus, did I realize my divine calling – And I will allow nothing to take that away
Scripture: “...so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” (1 Thessalonians 2:12) & "I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called." (Ephesians 4:1) Application
Romans 12:2 Proverbs 3:5-6 Philippians 4:8
Closing Prayer and Challenge:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We are deeply grateful for Your Word, which instructs and inspires us. Today, as we reflect on the profound message of 'Spiritual Parenting' from Paul's letters, we recognize the significance of genuine, godly relationships in our lives.
Lord, in the footsteps of great mentors from history—like Moses, Elijah, Paul, and even modern-day inspirations like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—we seek to be both guides and learners. Challenge us, Father, to live righteously, not just as individuals but as role models for others. Let our lives be a testament to Your love and guidance.
And now, as we head into the week, let each of us consider this challenge: Who in our lives can we guide with the nurturing touch of a mother, the wisdom of a father, or the passion of a dedicated mentor? How can we become better spiritual parents, sharing not just Your Word but our very lives, our triumphs, and our tribulations? Lord, reveal to us those who need our guidance and those from whom we can learn.
We ask for Your grace and strength in this endeavor. In the name of Jesus, we pray.
Amen.
