Psalm 1:1 ESV
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
“Blessed means supremely happy or fulfilled. In fact, in Hebrew the word is actually a plural, which denotes either a multiplicity or blessings or an intensification of them.” (Boice)
“It is not ‘Blessed is the king, blessed is the scholar, blessed is the rich,’ but, ‘Blessed is the man.’ This blessedness is as attainable by the poor, the forgotten and the obscure, as by those whose names figure in history, and are trumpeted by fame.” (Spurgeon)
Walk, Stand, and Sit
Be Worshipful The Person Who Receives a Blessing from God (vv. 1–2)

If you follow the wrong counsel, then you will stand with the wrong companions and finally sit with the wrong crowd

Council of the ungodly is the advice and guidance of those who do not fear God and who live in a way that is contrary to His commands.
Example of ungodly council.
A group of friends who encourage each other to drink and do drugs.
that sex outside of marriage is ok. Marriage defined as between one biological man and one biological woman.
A business associate who suggests that you cheat on your taxes to increase your profits
Take the job that makes the most money.
A celebrity who promotes promiscuity and ungodliness.
Psalms 1. What the Righteous Man Does Not Do (1)

i. First, it means the righteous man knows how to discern the counsel of the ungodly. Many fail at this point. They do not even consider if counsel is godly or ungodly. They hear advice, or theories about their problems, and they find themselves agreeing or disagreeing without considering, “Is this godly or ungodly counsel.”

First we should seek the highest counsel. God and the Bible. Its final authority in my life.
Then Counsel from Godly men and woman around us. Those that have been serving God for awhile and have been around the block.
Godly counsel will bring you back to the Word and God and what it says.
Here are some tips for avoiding the counsel of the ungodly:
Be careful about who you spend time with. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you to grow in your faith and to live a godly life.
We send our daughter to a private school because we don’t want her to grow up with ungodly people giving her counsel on how life should be lived.
Be careful about what you watch and read. Avoid media that promotes ungodly values and lifestyles.
Be discerning about the advice you receive. Pray for wisdom and discernment, and seek the counsel of trusted Christian friends and mentors. Ask them to get involved with major decisions in life.
Sit in the seat of the scornful:
Psalms 1. What the Righteous Man Does Not Do (1)

When others are putting down Christians, it is easy to sit with them and criticize them. It is easy because there are many things to criticize among Christians. But it is wrong, because we are then sitting in the seat of the scornful.

Example of watching a certain news station.
Psalm 1:2 ESV
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
But his Delight. What is it that we delight in? What do we pursue and delight in? Well I would assume your here today on Sunday morning because you delight to hear God’s word.
Meditation isn’t emptying your mind like in eastern religion but the opposite is true for the Christian. We are to fill our mind with His thoughts.
Meditation and reading are different things. Its good to read the Bible but here it speaks of meditation.
The definition of meditation is:
Psalms 1. What the Righteous Man Does Not Do (1)

The righteous man and the ungodly man are different in how they think, how they behave, and to whom they belong.

Psalm 1:3 ESV
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
