Introduction (v. 1)

Ch 8
Jesus feeds 4,000
Peter’s Confession
vv. 34-38

The identity of Jesus revealed (vv. 2-6)

vv. 2-3 - His transfigured state
Psalm 104:1 “1 Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty,”
John 1:14 “14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
v. 4 - His transfigured representation
Moses - the law
Elijah - the prophets
Malachi 4:4-6 “4 “Remember the law of Moses My servant, even the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel. 5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6 “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.””
Exalting Jesus in Mark He Is the Fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Mark 9:4)

With their appearing, the Law and Prophets are signaled as being fulfilled in the coming of Messiah who has brought the kingdom of God near (cf. Mark 1:15).

vv. 5-6 - Peter speaks up

The Instruction from God spoken (v. 7)

“This is my beloved Son”
“Listen to Him”
2 Peter 1:16-18 “16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.”

The Idea of the resurrection (vv. 8-13)

vv. 8-13
Luke 9:30 “30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,”
Mark 8:31-34 “31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” 34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.”

Conclusion

The British preacher Martyn Lloyd-Jones said, “The Son of God became man that the children of men might become children of God” (God the Father, 265). Jesus Christ is the hero of the Bible—God in a body, the Savior of sinners, the final sacrifice, and the glory of God made flesh. He took the three disciples up a mountain for a glimpse of glory. He wants to take you and me up to heaven to glory forever. Will you follow Him? Will you trust Him? You become what you behold! May we all behold Jesus now and forever.
