The Sign of Power
John 6:15-21
Power of a Storm-
Anton Seimon was chasing storms for National geographic in Western Oklahoma in May of 2013. He soon found himself way too close to a tornado that grew so quickly he couldn't even understand what he was seeing.
It was the largest tornado on record - 2 1/2 miles wide- 300 plus mph winds. That's 10X larger than what is considered a large tornado. It became large quickly, surprising many storm chasers. And then it backed up. It killed a storm chaser. It did very little damage because it hit rural western Oklahoma.
Storms can be terrifying. I can't imagine being in a storm on a boat.
As powerful as a storm can be, Jesus is more powerful.
John 6:15–21 ESV
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

5 Reasons We Can Trust Jesus

1. Jesus Intercedes (15)

John 6:15 ESV
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Jesus’ lifestyle was to pray. More than a habit.
High Priestly Prayer (John 17)
Prayed for self.
Prayed for disciples
Prayed for us (those who would be saved)
John 17:20–21 ESV
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
Sitting at right hand interceding for us today.
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

2. Jesus Sends (16-17A)

John 6:16–17 ESV
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
We don’t know exactly what Jesus told them to do. But they left without him in the dark.
John 20:21 ESV
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

3. Jesus Knows (17b-19a)

John 6:17–19 ESV
17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.
He knows how tough it is.
Romans 8:28 ESV
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Joseph- sold into slavery, becomes a prisoner, and then became 2nd most powerful person in the world.

4. Jesus Shows Up (19b)

Disciples did not expect Jesus to show up in that way.
Physically at some point, yes.
Supernaturally, no.
They felt alone. Jesus was on his way.
God is always at work around us.
ILL- Daniel’s Prayer Answered
Daniel 10:12–14 ESV
12 Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. 13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia, 14 and came to make you understand what is to happen to your people in the latter days. For the vision is for days yet to come.”

5. Jesus Calms (19c-21)

John 6:19–21 ESV
19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
calms storms and calms disciples
Jesus is God.
Jesus is powerful enough to fix anything in our life.
Took their fear and turned it into joy.
Psalm 30:11 ESV
11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,
CONCLUSION
Peter comes to Jesus
Matthew 14:28–33 ESV
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
We have to stop looking at the problems and look to Jesus.

Where is your faith?

Ephesians 2:8 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
