Pastor Kimani preached this morning: Are You Ready
I am going to spend some time over the next few weeks talking about some things to make sure we are ready for what is next!
What’s next?
One year from now:
Mirror services
Raise money for full time outreach director
Two years from now:
3 mirror services
1 million dollars
Are we ready?
Will we be ready? YES
One of the things that I am hearing from people regularly is; “Man, I’m so busy!”.
How many feel like there is not much more you can add to your list?
How many know that there are actually many more things that you could accomplish in your life, if you knew how?
Do you think that Steve Jobs accomplished all he did using the same principles of time management you do?
How about Elon Musk?
So what do we do?
Read a time management book;
15 Secrets Successful People know about Time Management by Kevin Kruse
At Your Best by Carey Niewwhof
Indistractable by Nir Eyal and Julie Li
How to Build Self Discipline by Marin Meadows
Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy
Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald
Here is the reality:
You have the same 24 hours in a day as Elon Musk!
You have the same 168 hours in the week as Steve Jobs!
You have the same 10,080 minutes in the week as Albert Einstein had!
You have the same 1,440 minutes in a day as I have!
Why do I not accomplish as much as other people?
I know that there are other mitigating factors...
I’m not as smart as Musk, Job’s or Einstein…
But why is it that some seem to accomplish so much and others get to the end of their day and have accomplished no more than a puppy chasing it’s tail all day...
A lot of action, sweat and pain (on the occasion the pup catches his tail), but nothing to really show for it!
Fable: time management
You can’t manage time… you can only manage you!
If you manage you, the calendar will take care of its self!
How do you control time!!!!
So teach us to number our days,
That we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Here is what I have found: Event based vs To Do list based.
Sunday I order Monday - clearly and specifically.
NOT A TODO LIST
To do lists are are for groceries!
If you are living your life off of a To Do list then you will always be frustrated because your list only grows!
Monday I order the rest of my week
Literally put events in my calendar.
My prayer times, study times, HBS, family times, meetings, errands, chores
If somethings has to be done, it HAS to become an event in my calendar.
Do this from your day off to your day off.
Monday to Monday for me.
Saturday to Saturday for most people.
Reta and Brooklynn on daily organization and project management.
Build this weeks action item list.
Hints and hacks:
Start with Action Items - show my action item list
Keep track of everything you do for a week!
Write it down - electronic vs hand written
Apps: Todoist, asana, phone calendar
How to decide what to do
Step One:
Rate the task in terms of importance:
Critical = 5 points
Necessary = 4 points
Important = 3 points
Helpful = 2 points
Marginal = 1 point
Step Two:
Decide the task’s urgency regarding when it must be done:
This month = 5 points Today = 5 points
Next month = 4 points Tomorrow = 4 points
This quarter = 3 points This week = 3 points
Next quarter = 2 points
End of year = 1 point
Step Three:
Multiply the rate of importance times the rate of urgency. Example: 5 (critical) X 4 (next month) = 20.
I then judge when I should complete the task according to the following scale:
A = 16–25 Critical task to be finished by end of month
B = 9–15 Important task to be finished by end of quarter
C = 1–8 Low priority to be finished by end of year
A = 15-25 today
B = 5-15 tomorrow
C = 1-5 this week
