Intro-
MARRIED TO THE LAW
+relentless at pointing out faults
+does not celebrate victories or jobs well done (you did what is expected)
+ Performance base relationship: we are good as long as you don’t mess up
+ The law is actually always right and never wrong
+ responsible
+ I try to remember how his perfectionistic qualities have an up-side. He is very responsible, trustworthy, dependable, loyal.
My husband would do things like:
Move knick-knacks 1 inch after I had dusted and perhaps accidentally not returned each object to its exact position.
Re-clean after I had cleaned.
Re-arrange the dishwasher after I had loaded it.
Come into the kitchen as I was cooking and change the temperature on each food item I was cooking (without comment or even asking my approval).
Complain if I had mail or papers on the counter.
Complain if I did not roll the toothpaste neatly from the bottom.
Complain that I did not do my errands in the “right order” if we tried to run errands together.
First two chapter are Testimonial/Personal/Gospel
Chapter 3-4 are the Doctrine/Principles/teaching concerning GRACE AND THE LAW
Abraham - God Righteousness and for Abrahams
Now Chapter 5-6 are the Practical/applicational of walking in GRACE/Spirit
The law of God is good, Holy, Spiritual.
Romans 7:12 “Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.”
Romans 7:14 “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.”
The Law of God does not motivate us in our hearts, Grace does.
It is the Grace of God that enable us to have the desire to do good.
-no doubt the Law command us to do good
but it does not help us to do it.
It is the grace of God that does that.
THEREFORE
The Grace of God is better

Applying liberty not bondage

The two command Paul gives v1-2
stand fast - keeping on standing fast in the Freedom/Liberty
don’t go back to legalism
how are we stay persistence to standing in liberty
Romans 5:1–2 “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
do not be entangled
stop being entangled
not trying to live under the law and LIVE IN THE GRACE OF GOD
Judizers - if you want be made righteous HERE IS HOW YOU CAN LIVE
examples - cir, You must be baptized in the right church
Acts 15:6–11 “Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: “Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.””
James stand up reminds them words of Amos
Amos 9:11–12 ““On that day I will raise up The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, And repair its damages; I will raise up its ruins, And rebuild it as in the days of old; That they may possess the remnant of Edom, And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,” Says the Lord who does this thing.”
Then the church leaders sent letter at the hands of Barsabas, Silas, and other leading men
Matthew 11:28–29 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
2. The By-Product of these two commands
Christ will not profit you anything
Judizer taught - you must be circumcised
many church with this ideology
Member
Baptized in our church
Specials underwear
It leads to Debtor
Of the totality of the Law
James 2:10 “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.”
Falling from Grace
Estranged from Christ
Law bring us into bondage
The purpose was be tuter and make us righteous
Postive - v5 living in light of Liberity is product righteousness
it comes by faith
just like Abraham
Galatians 3:5–9 “Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.”
v6 Second Positive Love
Faith working through Love
1 John 4:7–8 “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

Pauls Concerns for the church Galatia

Three concerns
The Race they ran v7-8
Galatians 5:7–8 “You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you.”
Hindered - cut off in the race
Ran cross country STORY
The race = the truth
Faith alone by Christ alone
v8 no other way to heaven then through Christ
The mind they had v9-10
Galatians 5:9–10 “A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.”
the mind of liberty
the mind of GRACE
1 Corinthians 5:6–7 “Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”
The mind of Christ
Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,”
The trouble they faced v11-12
Galatians 5:11–12 “And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off!”
I would not be suffering if i was preaching the law I would not received the persecution.
v12
Cut themselves off - Amputate
they would have no more spiritual children in this ideology
The care Paul desires
Liberty
Called to liberty
Galatians 5:13 NKJV
For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
do not use it for sin
NOT FREE TO SIN BUT FROM SIN
Romans 6:14 “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
BUT through love serve one another
1 Peter 2:16 “as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.”
Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.””
Law
For all the law is fulfilled in one word
Romans 13:8–10 “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Matthew 22:36–40 ““Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””
Love does not
bite
devour
it will consume one another
Conclusion
JESUS understand being biten and devoured
