The Wonder of Water (Number 20:1-13)
The Significance of Water (vs.2)
The Significance of Water (vs.2)
There is an estimated 333 million cubic miles of water on earth.
without water, most people say you would live only 3 days, so water is an important and vital necessity for survival.
Though the world can offer you physical water, it can in no way provide you spiritual living water that will last for all eternity.
When the world tells you it can offer you things to satisfy your thirsty soul, it’s actually a desert that can’t provide any water at all.
The Supplying of Water (vs.6-8)(“his water”)
The Supplying of Water (vs.6-8)(“his water”)
The Person
1 Corinthians 10:4 “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”
The Plentiness
John 4:10–14 “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Only Christ can give living water that satisfies the thirsty souls of men!
The Sacrifice of the Rock (vs.9-11)
The Sacrifice of the Rock (vs.9-11)
Moses “smote” the rock.
- “Smote” the act of beating an object or a person.
- Christ (our Rock) was smote, and living water came out!
The rock was submissive to Moses. It didn’t retaliate.
Our Rock is Christ. He was submissive to His Father. He didn’t retaliate
The Abundance of Water (enough for the congregation and the beasts)
- Revelation 22:17 “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.”
- How can we have abundant water? Because of the absence of water from the rock.
The Absence of Water
John 19:28–30 “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Jesus being thirsty shows that living water was coming out!
John 19:34 “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.”
The Applying of Water
Hebrews 10:19–22 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”
John 7:37–38 “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
The Appearing of Water
Zechariah 14:5–9 “And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; For the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: Yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake In the days of Uzziah king of Judah: And the Lord my God shall come, And all the saints with thee. And it shall come to pass in that day, That the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, Not day, nor night: But it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, That living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; Half of them toward the former sea, And half of them toward the hinder sea: In summer and in winter shall it be. And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: In that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.”
Revelation 22:1–5 “And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.”
