From Forsaken To Fellowship (Psalms 22:1-21)

Forsaken - deserted, left, abandoned

The Separation at Calvary (vs.1-3)

Isaiah 59:1–2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; Neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
Isaiah 53:4 “Surely he hath borne our griefs, And carried our sorrows: Yet we did esteem him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.”
Isaiah 53:12 “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, And he shall divide the spoil with the strong; Because he hath poured out his soul unto death: And he was numbered with the transgressors; And he bare the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.”

The Sorrows at Calvary

The Wondering (vs.4-5)
God helped saints in their despair, why not his Son?
Psalm 34:17 “The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, And delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
The Worm (vs.6)
- Isaiah 53:3 “He is despised and rejected of men; A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: And we hid as it were our faces from him; He was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
- Those that Christ was dying for forsook Him as well. They hated and despised Him. Even His disciples forsook Him (Matthew 26:56 “But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.” ) He was truly all alone.
The Waiting (vs. 7-8)
Matthew 27:39–44 “And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.”
The Wishing (vs.11)
- There was truly no one to help Christ.
The Wicked (vs.12-13)
- Gaped = to open the mouth with a desire to injure or devour.
Only used twice: here and in Job 16:10–14 “They have gaped upon me with their mouth; They have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; They have gathered themselves together against me. God hath delivered me to the ungodly, And turned me over into the hands of the wicked. I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: He hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, And set me up for his mark. His archers compass me round about, He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; He poureth out my gall upon the ground. He breaketh me with breach upon breach, He runneth upon me like a giant.”
The Water (vs.14-15)
The Whacking (vs.16)
- Piercing of the hands and feet
The Watching (vs. 17
- double application (bones and the beholders)(Luke 23:35 “And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.” )
The Wager (vs.18)
Luke 23:34 “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
The Wanting (vs.19-21)
- lion = a picture of Satan

The Steadfastness After Calvary

Hebrews 13:5 “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Christ took our sin, therefore was forsaken by His Father after eternity of fellowship. But because of Calvary, us that have been separated from God by our sin, can have eternal fellowship with God.
Christ was forsaken at Calvary so we could have fellowship, and never have to be forsaken ever!
