Last week we saw where Jesus told the disciples that they would be hated by the world.
In the first part of 16 we see why Jesus told them that.
John 16:1–4 NASB95
1 “These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling. 2 “They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God. 3 “These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me. 4 “But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
Radical Religious Extremist have and continue to kill people and believe with all their heart that they are serving God.
Believing that God wants you to be rich, happy, healthy above and beyond being obedient, will not prepare you for real life.
Jesus preparing his Disciples for His departure.
John 16:5 NASB95
5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
John 13:36 NASB95
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.”
We need to deal with this.....more importantly, we shouldn’t be afraid of this.
THIS ONE IS EASY.
These are two different conversations. (No one asks, this time)
When Peter asked in Chapter 13, was he really asking where Jesus was going or was he asking, what about us?
There are more difficult ones.
2 Kings 24:8 NASB95
8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.
2 Chronicles 36:9 NASB95
9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.
Yod - 10 is a small mark and I think when the text was being copied, it was left out in Chronicles.
I point this out, because when you are attacked about your faith, you will be ready with withstand.
Jesus continues.
John 16:6–15 NASB95
6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
Roles of the Holy Spirit:
Convict the world concerning Sin, Righteousness, and Judgement.
Guide you into all the truth.
Glorify Jesus

Conviction: Sin, Righteousness, Judgement

Sin - Verse 9 Because they do not believe in Me.
The sacrificial system was only a picture of what Jesus would do on the cross. Because of His fulfilment of the law, those sacrifices had no more worth.
Righteousness - Jesus goes to the Father. The Jewish leadership accused Jesus of Sin. His vindication is being with the Father. So because they don’t see Him (not in the grave) He proves their standard of Righteousness is flawed.
Judgment - The ruler of this world has been judged.
John 12:31 NASB95
31 “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
Jesus warned for us to Judge Correctly.
The Holy Spirit shows us the standard by which every person is judged.
Convictions leads to one of two things.
A. Hardening of the heart and condemnation. (willful ignorance)
B. Repentance and salvation.

The Holy Spirit: Guides you into all the truth.

John 16:13 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
Controversial Statement:
If a person never read the Bible, but was presented the gospel, get saved and receive the Holy Spirit. If they pray without ceasing, and listen to the Holy Spirit......The decisions they made about sin and how to live their life would be identical as if they read the Bible every day......
So why read the Bible?
Guitar - Perfect pitch. Tune one note.

The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ

Jesus said that He Glorifies the Father, The Holy Spirit’s role is to Glorify the Son.
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NASB95
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
(Glorify the Holy Spirit of God)
Jesus is True North. The Holy Spirit is our Compass that will alway point to Christ.
