Romans 4:13-25.
Last week we talked about Abraham being justified by faith. How God’s plan of justification by faith was a provision for all people to come to Him on the basis of faith. This is the last piece of the section of Romans that we’ve entitled “Coming under Grace” where Paul has shown Gentiles and Jewish Christians alike that we must and can only approach God by Grace through Faith. Today Paul finishes with his closing arguments of sorts.
The Promise
The promise comes by faith.
Genesis 17:4-6. Genesis 22:17-18.
To understand this promise we must understand Gal 3:16-18.
The promise pointed to Christ, which is why the promise comes only by faith.
The promise is not by law (v14, 15)
If it was by law it could not be for everyone
The law brings wrath, not life.
Where there is no law there is no transgression (blessed is the man who’s sin is not counted)
The promise is by Grace (v16)
God modeled through Abraham how the covenant would be. If it was only through the law, it would only be to physical descendants of Abraham; not all.
God made it to where all who come to faith would be heirs of the promise. Because anyone who shares the faith of Abraham is a son of Abraham, “Who is the father of us all”. (v17)
Our Hope
The Promiser is able (v17) (OUR HOPE IS SECURE)
God brings life to the dead Heb 11:6. Eph 2:5.
He call things into being that do not exist 1 Cor 1:28. Heb 11:3.
Our Belief
It’s not blind faith (v 18,19)
We are not convinced because our circumstances seem manageable, we are convinced because of the ability of our God. (v20,21)
Abraham considered these things (Gen 17:17.)
Gen 18:14. is God’s declaration, Heb 11:19 is his response.
WHAT WILL OUR RESPONSE BE IN TIMES OF DOUBT?
Our Righteousness
Being fully convinced by God, His word, His promise is what makes us RIGHTEOUS BY FAITH (V22)
It was recorded that we would understand that this was God’s covenant for ALL and not just the Jews alone (v23)
Righteousness comes to all who put their faith in Christ 1 Pet 1:21.
Trusting ONLY IN JESUS for my righteousness, means i am ONLY trusting in God.
Why does faith in Jesus make us righteous?
Isaiah 53:5-6.
Rom 5:18.
Jesus was killed for our sins, and He was raised for our Justification
1 Corinthians 15:17.
It’s the DEATH AND RESURRECTION THAT PERFECTLY JUSTIFIES US! Therefore, simply putting our faith in Jesus gives us perfect righteousness.
