Intro

perspective

pillar of fire

God makes a promise a whole book and a handful of generations ago
he tells Abram that this will happen and the smoking firepot goes before him through the sacrifice for the covenant
God has one last sign for the king of Egypt and his people before the Israelites go and he is going to make sure that everyone makes it to where they ought to be for it
doesn’t want them to go to the philistines
knows how the people are going to act before their attitude begins
God keeps his promises and knows what is best not only for us but for those around us
he works for good even when our selfish and misguided selves want something different or easy

walls of water

the people go where God leads them and commanded them to go
God hardens Pharaoh’s heart one last time and he becomes angry and sends his army after them on horseback
the people of Israel are sandwiched between an army that wants to defeat them and bring them back to slavery and a large body of water that none of them can likely swim through
they are caught up in seeing what is in front of them rather than seeing what God has brought them here for
they are afraid because they aren’t in control even though the presence of God couldn’t be more clear

Application

so often in life we excuse ourselves to live in the same mistakes and the same complacency because we are afraid of change
we are afraid of what we don’t know and even when God is appearing right in front of us it can be hard to have faith in him when we can’t see the bigger picture
we lack the perspective that God has and it gets us into trouble, causes us to try to take control of a life we ought to have given completely to God already
