Intorduction/background Information:
Introduction/ background information about Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome.
Before we dive right into the Letter known as the Book of Romans. Let’s look at the author, Purpose of the Letter of Rome, some historical background, Paul’s situation, and the theme of the Letter (Book).
Authorship of the Letter/ Book of Romans:
As Christian’s we understand that the true author of the Bible was God, and that God used man to write what we need to know in order to live a life for him. We as Christian’s understand that the Holy Spirit is what inspire the Apostles, Like Paul to write a letter to the Churches in Rome, we can see that from these verse here 2nd Tim 3:16-17, 1st Cor 2:4, 1st Cor 2:10, 1st Cor 2:13, and 2nd Pet 1:21.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
We just from this Verse here that all Scripture was given by the Inspiration of God.
And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
we also take note here that even Paul an Author, this knowledge is not from human wisdom.
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
Just a couple of verse down from Verse 4 we see that Paul states that God allows the Holy spirit reveals the deep things of God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
as we study God’s word we begin to understand that the Apostle had a much deeper understanding, because they spend time with Jesus, except for Paul, who became an Apostle after Christ’s death.
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
The Purpose of Letter:
Now that we have looked at the Authorship on the Letter of Roman’s. lets look at the Purpose of the Letter. Why was the letter written?
Paul at least writes about three reasons behind the letter of Roman’s:
A personal reason, Paul announces about wanting to come to Rome. Rom 1:11, and Rom 1:15
For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established—
So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.
2. A Theological Reason: To review and clarify the basic tenets of the Gospel
Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you, because of the grace given to me by God,
3. the third purpose of the letter: A financial reason: elicit support for a purposed trip to Spain.
For this reason I also have been much hindered from coming to you. But now no longer having a place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come to you, whenever I journey to Spain, I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while.
Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain.
