Places of Growth
Places of Growth
Reflect on what your working on this week?
Did anybody think of something difficult that they are going to do try out or accomplish this school year?
Accountability:
Did you write your intentional habits down?
2. How have you been growing yourself since last time?
3. What has been the biggest challenge to your habits? Time? Energy? Consistency?
4. How have the habits brought about short term change?
5. What did you do today to grow?
1. Growth is personal
2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
You can’t delegate growth, it’s no one else’s job to grow you but you
How are you pushing yourself to grow daily?
In the word
In prayer
reading books on leadership
scheduling your time
Creating better habits
Saying NO
I used to say yes to everything
Heard a minister being asked a question, “do you have any regrets?” the minister said, Anything i’ve done out of obligation
You have to come to the point and practice growth it doesn’t come over night
2. Growth is intentional
Not only do I grow
Where do you grow?
16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
Jesus had a place that went to for growth with the Father:
Where is a place for you to grow?
3 places you need for growth:
A prayer Closet
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Jesus gave very definite instructions concerning prayer:
We are to enter into our private room and shut the door.
We may be out in the field, in the heart of a forest, or on a quiet hillside
Alone with you and God
What do you do first?
Eliminate distractions
Create an atmosphere for focus
Give yourself time for your prayers to turn into desires
1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
And wither as the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
And your justice as the noonday.
7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth.
So many times in prayer my thoughts and words are recited as a hurried regurgitation of things i’ve said before
Change your confessions to desires
The Shut door creates space between you and the world:
If you’re not actively shutting the door to the world, the world will try to shut the door on God
You have put your business, your ambitions, your pleasures, far from you
18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
I have seen so many people get a job or in a relationship
We must seek to shut the door and close out the world
We commune with a God who knows us intimately:
He knows the right path for your life
What plans to make your relationships grow and flourish
He knows what is best for your family and business
He knows our hurts our wants our fears
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
2. A place of Accountability
a. Personal accountability
How good are you at holding yourself accountable?
We lead more out of who we are than out of what we do
If we fail to recognize that who we are on the inside informs every aspect of our leadership we will do damage to ourselves and others we lead
Are you good at being self-aware?
Most leaders search out books on leadership to discover new tools, ideas and skills.
But the most difficult person to lead is yourself
Why is that?
It requires confronting parts of who we are that we prefer to neglect, forget or deny
In the book the “Emotional Healthy Leader”
He refers to these areas of us as the shadow
“Your shadow is the accumulation of the untamed emotions, less-than-pure motives and thoughts that, while largely unconscious, strongly influence and shape your behaviors. it is the damaged and mostly hidden version of you who you are.” -Peter Scazzero
It can be outburst of anger, jealousy, resentment, lust, greed etc
Or it may reveal itself more subtly through a need to rescue others or be liked by people, a need to be noticed or the inability to stop working
Aspects of the shadow may be sinful, but they may be simply weakness or wounds
For me my willingness to be liked and cared so much about how other people saw me
Because of not knowing who God called me to be
A lot of addictions are a result un resolved inner conflicts and feelings that have never been confronted
Facing your shadow takes intense and sometimes supernatural courage
Examples of how the Shadow reveals itself in leadership:
We have a gift of speaking or mobilizing people/The shadow side we have an insatiable need for affirmation
2. WE value excellence/We don’t allow ourselves to make mistakes, either covering for our mistakes or not making them and staying stuck
3. We want to maximize our potential in business or church/ We create and unsustainable pace for others to keep up with
4. We love to serve behind the scenes/ We hide ourselves to avoid talking to others to maintain distance
5. We are visionaries/ We are addicted to the high of starting something new but never see things to completion
Group Questions:
How good are you at examining your behavior?
Do you correct other or yourself more?
How good are you at making course corrections?
How do you balance correcting behavior and beating yourself up when you make mistakes?
Give an example of a time you successfully corrected a behavioral issue
b. Seek accountability through others
Most people want people around them to make them feel better
Leaders want people around them to keep them on the right track
There is no growth without accountability
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For each one shall bear his own load.
Without accountability there is no maturity
We lead more out of who we are than out of what we do
If we fail to recognize that who we are on the inside informs every aspect of our leadership we will do damage to ourselves and others we lead
The good news for us as Christians is that we are more than our shadow or our Past
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Personal Questions:
What is something about your behavior that you wish you were better at?
What is one thing you are displeased yourself that you know need to change?
Who do you have in your life to keep you accountable?
The third place we need is
3. A place to stretch us
The Holy Spirit stretches us
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Mentorship might look like accountability
But it’s also a place that gets you to think Bigger
Surround yourself with people who are where you want to be
13 And so it was, on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening. 14 So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”
17 So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. 18 Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. 20 And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do. 21 Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.”
24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.
Moses met with God face to face:
Now his father in law is giving him advice
Often times God puts people in your life to show you humility
Your humility in receiving from other people will often correlate how much you can receive from God
Generally speaking God will use people for warnings
He’ll warn you through the holy spirit and confirm it through others
It takes humility to take instruction from man
God will put people in our lives to give us instruction
Look at Joshua
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”
13 So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.” 15 Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain.
16 Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. 18 So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
Joshua was removed from the group-think of Isreal
Moses brought Joshua to higher level of thinking than the people around Him
This is the place you ask questions not talk about accomplishments
Questions:
Where do you need to be stretched in your thinking?
Who can help you get there?
Be prepared with questions for a mentor
Do not squander the opportunity you get
What area of your life do you need a mentor the most? (Physically, mentally, spiritually, financially)?
