Studying God’s Word

Over the years of Christianity there have been many methods developed for studying God’s Word. Many of us take different approaches and respond to different methods or ways. There is much we can learn from those who have come before us and how they have studied the scriptures.
For Next week I would like you to take time in the word and read the passages we will be studying next week multiple times. Put it on your heart. Hear the the word and retain it. Remember what Jesus said. “whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” (Luke 8:8)

Instructions

Take 10 minutes in Silence. Quiet your heart and invite God to speak.
You will read the chosen passage four times
Take time to reflect in silence following each reading.
Pray before your reading. You may want to pray the prayer of Samuel, “Speak, Lord, For your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9).
1st Reading—Listen to for the word or phrase that strikes you. It might come across as “Louder” than the others, or it may resonate with the experiences you have had with the same word. You may want to read the passage twice to give ample time for receiving the word that God wants to give. In the silence after the reading just savor the word or phrase without trying to figure it out or make application connections. Write down what phrase or word stood out to you.
2nd Reading—Listen for the way in which your life is touched by this word. In the silence ponder these questions.
How is my life touched by this word?
What in my life needs to hear this word today?
Write down any responses that you have.
3rd Reading—Listen to God’s invitation to you. Is there something God is inviting you to do or to be—contained in his word? How will you respond? Write down your invitation and response from God.
4th Reading—Rest in God with the word you have received. Sit in silence after reading the passage and take comfort and rest in knowing God can bring about whatever it is he is inviting you to do or to be.

Read the Following Passage 8:16-25 You can break this down into smaller segments across the next week. V. 16-18; 19-21; 22-25
