2 Samuel 18:9  And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

To begin with brothers and Sisters, Christian Friends, Well Wishers and Saints of God as we look at this biblical narrative we find that it’s a Family Affair, it’s a Political Affair, it’s a Loyalty Affair, and it’s a Military Affair.

The efficacy of the text demand effort and efficiency for a winner to emerge from the conflict.

It’s a contest for David But it’s a conquest for Absalom. It was heart felt for David but it was hateful for Absalom. It was parental Love for David but it was sibling rivalry for Absalom. The worst thing in the world is to have to fuss and fight with your Father and mother or your own brothers and sisters.

It’s a Family Affair, it’s a Political Affair, It’s a Loyalty Affair, and it’s also a Military Affair.

Part I. Let’s talk about the Family Affair first.

1. In all of our families there are some schisms, some rifts, some tears, and some undertows. Yes in your family and in mine. And the bible says that after David finished messing around with Bathsheba that the Lord sent the prophet Nathan to tell David that he was out of line and that trouble was going to be coming to your household from your own household. In Psalms 51 David said I repent Lord Create in me a clean heart oh God renew the right spirit within me. Brothers and sisters “You reap what you sow”. And sometimes trouble comes with big suitcases and travel bags and trouble means to stay around for a while. Yes sir

2. In 2 Samuel 13 David had a son by the name of Ammon and in 2 Samuel 13 :4 Ammon said I’m in love with my brother Absalom’s sister. Long story short Ammon raped his half sister Tamar and then hated her for. She was so pretty. But Tamar was Absalom’s whole sister and both of them were some good looking people.

3. David found out about it and wanted to sweep it under the rug and say stuff like what happens in this house stays in this house. David didn’t deal with it too good and things got ugly. And the Church said Amen.

4. In 2 Samuel 13:23-33 The bible says two years later Absalom devised a plan to kill his own brother Ammon. Absalom got Ammon drunk then had his servant carry out his plan and they kill Ammon. The family is all torn up. In this story, “We’ve got rape, incest, conspiracy, and murder”. Because It’s a Family Affair. David is furious but doesn’t do anything. Brothers and sisters You never know what’s going on in people’s families. and I don’t dig to find out.

5. The bible says in 2 Samuel 13:30-39 that Absalom runs off to his mother’s household in Geshur after he kills his brother Ammon. He stays there for 3 years in fear of his father David.

6. Then In 2 Samuel 14 Joab was David’s General in the army and Joab convinced David to let Absalom return by recruiting a wise woman from Tekoa. She masqueraded as a bereaved mother whose remaining son’s life was being threatened. David began to show compassion to the wise woman and then! she pointed out to David that his own son Absalom deserves a second chance. And that’s one of those ahh you got me moments. The pot can’t call the kettle black

7. David restores Absalom from exile but! David still wouldn’t let him come around his household for the next two years. David was saying I see something in you that I really don’t like. You don’t have to admit it to me, but we all see some things in our own children that we just don’t like sometimes!!!

8.The bible says in 2 Samuel 14:25-28 that Absalom was good looking, handsome, and fine And and and his sister Tamar that died after the rape she was drop dead gorgeous. So I read back and found out where they got their good look from. The bible says in 1 Samuel that when the prophet Samuel came to anoint the little shepherd boy David to be king that he was good looking then in 2 Samuel 3:3 that Absalom mother Maacah was beautiful but also I found out that Maacah great great grandpa was Nahor. Nahor was Abraham’s brother. It’s way down the Bloodline but they all were kinfolk. And since I’ve been down here at the Pilgrim BC I’ve found out that all ya’ll are kin some kind of way , so it’s a Family Affair. And the church said Amen.

Part II. To the Hung up on your hang ups sermon is The Political Affairs of being Hung Up by your Hang Ups.

1. This is where the trouble starts. The bible says in 2 Samuel 15:1-12 that Absalom immediately started a campaign of subversion. And subversion mean that Absalom wanted to over throw his Father’s Government from top to bottom. Wait nah Absalom is good looking, handsome, and the bible says that Absalom is cunning, clever, smooth talking and slick like Rick. So in 2 Samuel 15:3-6 Absalom has started to assume power that wasn’t given to him. He started judging matters that King David was supposed to handle. So the people thought of Absalom as beautiful and wise but was David old and outdated.

2. Absalom conspired to be King in Hebron. And the reason Absalom wanted to be declared king in Hebron was because that’s where his father David was declared king over Judah and Israel. Hung Up on your hang ups. Oh Absalom is slick, he’s sly, and he’s slimy because if you’ll do that to your own parents I know what you’ll do to me.

3.The bible says to Honor your Father and your mother that your days may be long on the land of the living. Honor is concretely and collectively what you value! What you esteem in the highest degree and lastly What you consider with dignity to be precious and priceless. If I can’t help my mother and father I sure ain’t going to be the one to hurt them. And the church said Amen.

4. David has to flee from the the throne because his own son Absalom is trying to kill him and take over. Yes indeed.

Part III. Then the third thing I want to point out in this biblical Narrative is It’s a Loyalty Affair now and what we find is that

1. David takes flight with his whole household and his warriors they flee to the Jordan River. He’s got opponents in the conspiracy and David has supporters who won’t go along with Absalom’s conspiracy.

2. There were folks on the right side of history.Loyalty means a lot!!! David had Ittai who was the leader of the six hundred mighty men from Gath.

Then David had (A buy ya thor) Abiathar the priest and Zadok the priest who were on his side. and the bible says in 2 Samuel 15:24-29 that David told the priests not to bring the Ark of the Covenant with them in the flight away from Absalom.

3. There are also traitors in the camp....The bible says in 2 Samuel 15:12

(Ah hit tha fell) Ahithophel was David’s trusted advisor and counsellor and he went and sided with Absalom. And when (Ah hit tha fell) Ahithophel did that, he made the conspiracy even stronger against David. David was so upset about it until he went up Mt Olivet with his head covered weeping and walking up the mountain barefoot.

Man it’s a hurting thing when the closest people around you turn on you. It’s not a good feeling. It’s something I’ve been through before.

Then the last thing I want to teach talk and tell us about in 2 Samuel is that it’s a Military Affair. Yeah 3x

1. You have David’s closest advisor and counsellor against him. And when you’ve got so called friends that turn out to be enemies, they how to get you, when to get you, and where to get you at. And the bible says in 2 Samuel 17:1-4 that ( Ah hit tha fell)Ahithophel and Absalom wanted to send 12 thousand men to make a selective strike that would only kill David and bring all of the people that was with David back without killing them.

2. But the bible says in 2 Samuel 17:5-14 that David had a counter offense. David had an inside man named Hushai( Who- Shy). Hushai was a spy for David. And (Who- Shy) Hushai told Absalom you know you daddy is a mighty warrior don’t ya? and you know he ain’t no fool right? you know he’ll he’ll see this coming a mile away right? and you know David will whoop you like a step child right? And So king Absalom before you got half cocked and ill prepared I suggest you plan a large scale mobilization strategy against King David. Absalom agreed. Yeah yeah that’s what I’ll do. However This military strategy gave (Who Shy) Hushai time to get (A buy ya thor)Abiathar the priest and Zadok the Priest time to hurried back to David and tell him to get ready quick because Absalom is coming after you, so move your location. And so 2 Samuel 18 tell us that the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. Wait a minute 3x .The people said King David you’re not going to the battle but we’ve got your back. It should never be a time when you people throw your pastor under the bus for the hungry wolves to get him. They told David stay home we got this. And the church said Amen.

Hung Up on your hang ups

Brothers and sisters this Family Affair has turned into a Political Affair that has turned into a Loyalty Affair that has turned into a Military Affair. And the church said Amen. Brothers and sisters this thing turned turned into a Full scale civil war.

It’s about to be Israel against Israel. Say it ain’t so.

And brothers and sisters don’t see that there’s something wrong with this picture. It can’t be Pilgrim fighting Pilgrim . It’s like me having to fight with my own children over my house and my land while I’m still living.

Brothers and sister Absalom know he dirty!!! Tell your neighbor: He dirty yeah. And have you noticed Nobody names their child Absalom and nobody names their child Judas Iscariot. Absalom was good looking yeah yeah yeah better looking than Solomon, and Better looking than David. and both Solomon and David were good looking.

Brothers and sisters Pound for pound Absalom is the best looking man in all of the bible. But yet Nobody in their right mind names their child Absalom. Because He’s Hung up on his hang ups. And the church said Amen

And so I’ve got to close here but tah the battle was down in the forest of Ephraim and there were thousands of soldiers fighting on both sides um um um. And the bible says that many people died that day.

And the bible says that the forest killed more people than the sword. Um um um

And Absalom was riding on his Mule Great God yes. And after while and by and by Absalom rode him Mule under some thick oak trees And the trees got a hold of his pretty hair Oh Lord

And the Mule rode off right from under Absalom. Oh Lord and The bible says that Absalom was hanging by hair in the thick oak trees. Don’t you see him trying to get loose He’s scrimming, He wiggling and giggling trying to get loose and when Joab David’s commanding Officer saw him He took out his spear and stabbed Absalom throw the heart. Oh yes he did. And I heard that when David got the news he began to weep for Absalom and Joab said King oh King if you don’t get out there and untied this kingdom there won’t be a kingdom left to unite. You’re the chosen King by God Almighty. And you better stop being hung up bu your hang up and take command. And I got one more thing I’ve got to tell Pilgrim Baptist Church you better step into your new future and leave the past behind. Oh Lord because I refuse to be Hung up on my Hang ups. Lord Because God has made us the head and not the tail above and not beneath. We are the lender and not the borrower. Because God saved our soul and made us whole pick us up and turned us around put our feet on solid ground . yes I don’t know about you but I’ve seen the lighting flashing and I’ve heard the thunder roar I’ve seen sin breakers dashing trying to conquer my soul but I heard the voice from heaven saying still fighting Because I promise never to leave nor will I ever forsake you. And yeah though I wqalk throw the valley of the shadows of death I’ll fear no evil for thous art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me thous prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies thous anoint my head with oil and my cup runneth over Surely Goodness and Mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. I’ve got one more thing to ask you Ain’t he alright? 2x Don’t fool in here But if you know He’s Alright Let me hear ya Say Yeah Say Yeah Say Yeah . Oh Lord.
