The issue in Colosse like much of the world at this time and still today is that the world is full of false teachers. Teachers that will give Christ a place of eminence, and therefore are not outright denying Him but the Bible teaches that He is to have preeminence. Jesus was not just a great man among men, He is the Son of God, Creator of all things, Saviour of the World, and therefore He is preeminent in all things.
False teaching has a message that is shared but it is a message without power. Their teaching was that of angelic beings, one of legalism, rules, and one of bodily discipline, but their was no power to conform into the image of Christ. The Gospel of Christ has power to not only save but to change! The Bible is clear that the flesh is weak and corrupt, yet so often we “do” in the flesh…
Paul writes that he heard of their faith, but not just any faith. Their faith in Christ Jesus! A faith that produces, and a faith that works!
How were they saved? (vs. 5) hearing the word of truth!
1. They had love to all the saints (vs. 4)
2. They had hope in heaven (vs. 5)
3. They had love in the Spirit (vs. 8)
Paul’s prayer for the saints to grow:
Know His will
Walk to please the Lord.
Work to bear fruit.
Increase in knowledge.
Would know His power.
End with reading 1:15-23
