Life through the Spirit

9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

V.9 - Paul is now talking directly to Christians here. He starts by saying “You” and then going into how people are not of the flesh. Christian, you are in the Spirit because of the work that Jesus has done for you on the cross.
We see here a clear distinction though that shows something. That a persons life changes when they become a believer. That it is the moment that they are saved that they are indwelt with the Holy Spirit. Why do you think Paul makes this distinction?
1 John 4:13

13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

Romans 3. Living in the Spirit (8:1–39)

Without his Spirit there can be no assurance of salvation.

This is a clear distinction here right? That the Spirit is only given to believers, and from the Spirit comes the fruit that we talked about last week, so when Jesus is saying to produce fruit in John, He knows that He is talking about the fruit that only comes from salvation.
V.10 - What do you think Paul means here?
Salvation truly is a life and death situation. Sin has the consequence of death. We were never made for death, but our physical bodies will die. But in Christ, because of Him, there is Life.
Romans 3. Living in the Spirit (8:1–39)

Death is the absence of God; life is a right standing before him.

V.11 - Paul talks a lot about this idea of the believer being raised to life from Jesus
1 Corinthians 4:14

14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.

What do you think this is pointing toward? There is a promise here and the promise is not only life here in this world, but also in the life to come as well. You see here, also like in many of Pauls other letters, He is trying to show the promise that God will raise us to eternal life with Him.
That is the promise, and in this section, He is really trying to show that this is only for the believer and no one else. That you need Jesus
