Review & Overview

1. Previous Study’s Review

Moses is still on the Mountain of God… Receiving instructions from God… from Ex.24-32
In chp.28-29 God instructed Moses on the Priesthood… & we looked at 3 things:
People in the Priesthood…
Garments for the Priesthood…
Consecration of the Priesthood…
We saw that God chose Aaron and his sons to be a special people different from the rest to be priests…
1 Peter 2:9 You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people…

2. Current Study’s Overview

In chp.30-31 God continues to instruct Moses regarding several things: 7 if your taking notes…

1. The Altar of Incense Vs. 1-10

Show Video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/shHSzCQ-mao?si=bt98BvxW0zW-WBS1

1.1 Vs. 1-6

Acacia is a hard wood, also called Shittim or the Umbrella tree found by the Dead Sea…
1 cubit is about 18”… so the Altar was about 1 ½’ sq. x 3’ high.

1.2 Vs. 6

the Altar of Incense was in the Holy Place where the Lamp-stand & Table of Showbread were… it was not in the Holiest Place where the Ark of the Testimony was…
Though in Heb.9:4 we’re told there was a golden censer in the Holy of Holies outlined in Lev.16:12-14 which was used during the Day of Atonement to burn incense… Look at vs.10.

1.3 Vs. 7-9

So the incense was to be offered or burned every Morning… & every Evening...
When the Priest offered the incense that would be the signal for the people to Pray… the thought was that the incense would lift their prayers to God…
In Luke 1:10 the people would pray at the Temple at the hour of incense...
Luke 1:10 NKJV
10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
Psalm 141:2 NKJV
2 Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
APPLICATION: Prayer is a good way to Start the day… & End the day…
In the Bible, prayer is portrayed as the intimate communication between the Creator and the created.
When we approach God’s throne with sincerity, humility, and righteousness, our prayers are like incense, a sweet aroma rising up to the heavens.
It’s not the eloquence of our words, but the condition of our hearts that God looks upon. He yearns for a relationship with us, inviting us to lay our hearts and speak our deepest needs, desires, and confessions.
Jesus Himself, our greatest example, often withdrew to lonely places to converse with the Father. In solitude, He laid down His burdens, sought wisdom, and fortified Himself for the journey ahead.
This divine communion was the wellspring of His strength and the source of His wisdom.
We, too, are called to have this type of relationship with our Heavenly Father.
In the quiet corners of our lives, away from the clamor and clamour of the world, we find solace in His presence.
Our earnest prayers, drenched in faith and righteousness, have the power to move mountains, heal the broken, and bring forth the rains of revival.
Matthew 6:6 NKJV
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 NKJV
17 pray without ceasing,

2. The Numbering the People Vs. 11-16

2.1 Vs. 11-13

a half a shekel or twenty gerahs is about 1/5 of an ounce…
One reason this money was paid was to Ransom the person giving it… or to purchase there life, so that no plague came upon them…

2. Vs. 14-16

So this money was also used to Service the Tabernacle…
Which no doubt included paying the Levites who were not numbered among this group, Num.1:47… & for maintenance and repairs of the Tabernacle…
It was a Tabernacle Tax if you will… in Matt.17:24 Peter was asked about paying the Temple Tax.
Matthew 17:24 NKJV
24 When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”
APPLICATION: Sad, some churches have implemented the philosophy of mandatory giving… they track you down.
Our giving is not mandatory… there is no Church Tax… 2 Cor.9:7 we give freely, cheerfully.
2 Corinthians 9:7 NKJV
7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

3. The Bronze Laver Vs. 17-21

Show Video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/LBeXPE9GoPw?si=__vD7rWZnlxdNQxS
This Laver was in the courtyard of the Tabernacle, just after the Altar of Burnt Offering…
The Priest would wash their hands & feet not for hygiene but for holiness… it was done symbolically.
In Luke 11:38 the Pharisee’s marveled that Jesus didn’t wash…
Luke 11:38 NKJV
38 When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.
in Mark 7:3 they washed in a special way.
Mark 7:3 NKJV
3 For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands in a special way, holding the tradition of the elders.
We too have been washed, not with water… but with the blood of the Lamb…
1 Peter 1:19 NKJV
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.
Revelation 1:5 NKJV
5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,
In the passage, washing served as a form of preparation, a way for Aaron and his sons to cleanse themselves before serving God.
This act of preparation was not merely external or physical but symbolized a deeper, internal purification.
If your taking notes, In today’s context, preparation might involve several elements:
1. **Heart Preparation:** Before engaging in worship, prayer, or reading scripture, preparing one’s heart by reflecting on God’s attributes, confessing sins, and fostering a humble and receptive spirit is crucial.
2. **Mind Preparation:** Clearing the mind of distractions, focusing on God’s word, and being open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
3. **Intentionality:** Approaching God with a specific purpose, whether it be seeking guidance, expressing gratitude, or interceding for others, enhances the significance of the encounter.
This concept brings Reverence when we approach God with awe, respect, and recognition of His holiness and sovereignty.
Aaron and his sons demonstrated reverence by following God’s instructions meticulously, acknowledging the gravity of approaching the holy God.
Again, if you are taking notes, In a modern application, reverence could be shown by:
1. **Respectful Behavior:** During worship services, maintaining a demeanor of respect and awe, such as through attentive listening, thoughtful participation, and mindful silence, exemplifies reverence.
2. **Honoring God’s Word:** Treating the scriptures with respect, meditating on them, and applying them diligently shows reverence for God’s revelation.
3. **Prayerful Posture:** Approaching God in prayer with humility, submission, and a willingness to listen and obey reflects a reverent attitude.
ILLUSTRATION: Imagine a person named Alex, who regularly attends church services. However, he or she often rushes into services last minute, is frequently distracted during worship, and seldom engages deeply with the scripture or the sermon.
Imagine for a moment a person like this begins to:
1. **Before Service:** Alex starts arriving earlier to church, spending the extra time in quiet reflection, confessing any sins, and praying for an open heart to receive God’s word.
2. **During Service:** Alex actively participates in worship, singing with devotion, listening attentively to the sermon, and taking notes for further reflection.
3. **Scripture Engagement:** Alex begins to approach the Bible with greater reverence, studying it regularly, meditating on its teachings, and seeking to apply them in daily life.
4. **Prayer Life:** Alex cultivates a more reverent prayer life, adopting a posture of humility, listening for God’s guidance, and submitting to His will.
Through intentional preparation and reverence, this person with for sure experiences a deeper connection with God, a greater understanding of His word, and a more fulfilling worship experience.
The practices symbolized by the washing of Aaron and his sons serve as a blueprint for this person’s approach to God, fostering a relationship characterized by respect, humility, and devotion.

4. The Holy Anointing Oil Vs. 22-33

12 ½ lb. Myrrh, 6 ¼ lb. Cinnamon, 6 ¼ lb. Cane, 12 ½ lb. Cassia (tree bark), Hin: 4-6 qrts.
This oil was used to anoint the Tabernacle & everything in and around it… including the Priests…
In other words everything was sanctified or set apart for the Lord…
What a beautiful picture for us… Psl.24:1 the earth is the Lord’s and all who dwell within…
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NKJV
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Everything we have & are belongs to the Lord… so it should be set apart for the Lord…

5. The Incense Vs. 34-38

Stacte: gum resin from a shrub.
Onycha: maybe from some kind of shell.
Galbanum: resin from a plant.
They all had a sweet aroma… & they all belong to the Lord, vs.37.
APPLICATION: We’ve mentioned we too belong to the Lord… so the question is, is our life a sweet aroma to the Lord.
Does our life please the Lord… bless the Lord… is it a sweet aroma to the Lord…

6. The Workmen Ch. 31:1-11

Here are a couple of guys that the Lord has gifted with great talents & great abilities…
There are a many people today that the Lord has gifted: sports… musicians… brilliant mind…
Then of coarse there is the rest of us…
But what blessed me was in vs.3, they were filled with the Spirit of God…
While its true the Holy Spirit distributes the gifts as He wills, 1 Cor.12:11
We all can be Filled with the Spirit of God…
in Acts 2:4 they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…
Acts 2:4 NKJV
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 4:8 Peter was filled with the H.S…
Acts 4:8 NKJV
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:
over and over again they were Filled with the H.S. And all we have to do is ask…
Luke 11:13 NKJV
13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

7. The Sabbath Law Vs. 12-18

The Sabbath Rest was the 4th commandment from Ex.20:8. patterned after the creation account, vs.17…
No regular work was to be preformed… it was a day of rest, set apart for the Lord…
In Mark’s gospel Jesus got in trouble for picking grain on the Sabbath…
Mark 2:27 NKJV
27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
In other words its not about a particular day… its about a particular person… our rest isn’t based on a day of the week… our rest is based in Jesus Christ…
Ephesians 2:14 (NKJV)
14 For He Himself is our peace...
or Sabbath… our Peace… no matter what day of the week it might be.
Matthew 11:28–30 NKJV
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
