Who is Jesus?
He is the Way to Eternal Life.
Introduction: The vs An
John 14:1–7 HCSB
“Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going.” “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where You’re going. How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. “If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
Outline:
How can we know the way?
We are all asking “how can we know the way?”
Jesus’s answer to this question is crucial
(Liar, Lunatic, or Lord)
John 14:6–7 “Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. “If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.””
Jesus believes He is THE way not just a way.
Why did He say this?
His motive was to be helpful.
Thomas seems to be troubled, and Jesus is looking help him find that answer.
Three assumptions people make against Jesus’ exclusive claims.
1. There is no absolute Truth. Jesus is only a way not THE way.
2. All the major religions are similar in nature.
3. We can approach eternal life like consumers; which product is best for you?
Why is one way offensive?
John 14:6Except”
John 14:6 HCSB
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

“Exclusivity is not a bad especially if you have a great need.”
Illustration: Double vision, Taxi, the greeter, deloris gift shop, sales rep. Doc, leading hand specialist. I need an E.R. neurologist! Here is Eddie the resident, Finally dr. Marks Head of the Hospital specializing in neurology and strokes.
Are you narrow-minded and exclusive if you want Dr. Marks over Deloris?
The greater the need the more specific the solution.
John 9:1–3 HCSB
As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. His disciples questioned Him: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.
John 9:6–12 HCSB
After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. “Go,” He told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing. His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the man who sat begging?” Some said, “He’s the one.” “No,” others were saying, “but he looks like him.” He kept saying, “I’m the one!” Therefore they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So when I went and washed I received my sight.” “Where is He?” they asked. “I don’t know,” he said.
The decision to follow Jesus’ exclusive instruction is not irrational, narrow-minded, or arrogant. Seeking exclusivity with life's big decisions is the way we all operate.
How can we know the way?
Jesus says, I am the Way
bonus: and the truth. Meaning I will help you build principles that you can stand on so that floods of this world will not sweep you away with it.
and I am the Life. Since the big decision you need to make are a matter of life and death and I am The life.
According to the text there are 4 claims Jesus makes exclusive to only Him.
1. He is granting you grace in times of trouble by granting you a personal connection with God.
(He is granting you the gift of the Holy Spirit.)
John 14:1 HCSB
“Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.
John 14:6 HCSB
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
2. He is making a final payment for your mistakes.
John 14:2 HCSB
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.
3. He is granting you the ability to rise again.
John 14:3 HCSB
If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.
4. He is the embodiment of God in human form and He is providing you with the very best of assurance
John 14:7 HCSB
“If you know Me, you will also know My Father. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”
We have assurance. What you completely is completely done.
Salvation maybe narrow but the invitation is wide, and all can come.
