John 6:22-59

I AM — Have you ever been to the place where you ask yourself WHO AM I?
Could you write out an explanation of who you are?
start the paper with I AM____
Could you do that right now?
When i attempted to do this as a mental exercise
i was confronted by
things that are Definitely me
Things that i want to be me
Things that are not me but i do
and things that i am not quite yet
i was travelling down a very long road
and it felt like i didn’t know the destination.
Jesus did not operate that way.
Jesus knew exactly who He was
We ask the QUESTION
WHO AM I?
Maybe you will notice something different
about yourself
Compared to Jesus?
it will be clarity of where we are at in our walk
and what we need to improve.
This exercise will
Help you answer the “blank”
I AM______________
Some Biblical Clarity:
we are purposed by God to be on a road
and trust Him alone that He knows where we are going
and what will happen along the way.
Jesus knew exactly who He was
Jesus is I AM
God is I AM
therefore Jesus is God
Today we are looking at a sermon from Jesus
I want to tell you up front that as i was preparing this message i read a metaphor
This verses are like standing at the base of an amazing mountain and i am unable to take you to the top.
but as i was thinking on that statement
i realized that i can help you stand and view the mountain with awesome wonder.
and praise God that HE IS GOD and I am NOT
Lets read this verses today
Listen to the sermon from Jesus.
John 6:22–59 (ESV)
22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”
42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—
46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
48 I am the bread of life.
49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
This is a sermon from Jesus
and it would be hard to compete
with a message from Jesus
So today i seek to do a Bible Study on these verses
at good start is to look at the context of the verse
Context is King

Context

Mission to understand that
Jesus is the BREAD of Life
Who
People interested in being fed by Jesus, many from the feeding of the 5000 event.
He fed them BREAD.
bread is a universal and timeless item
all times and all cultures know what BREAD is.
Jews that where seeking Jesus because He fed them
Jesus is talking to Jewish people in the area for Passover Week.
I read that it was customary for the Jewish during passover to seek the Rabbis and listen to the teachings.
If that is the Reason
then Scripture of course makes sense.
People were amazed and where hungry for teaching.
BUT they were physically hungry also
many would be from far out of the area
it was Passover Feast (john 6:4)
But there was a lot of political tension from the Jews and Romans.
Jesus walks away to avoid a rebellion to make Him King (john 6:15)
But i want to say it again, because it is important in this text
Jesus is addressing Jewish people
- many devout as they travelled for the Passover.
Good Bible study must start with Prayer for Understanding
and Understanding
WHO the AUDIENCE is
the JEWS in the Audience:
know the I AM
they knew of YAHWEH
they knew of the BREAD - this not something we know because of Scripture
and they did not
they knew that they were to be taught
they knew the prohibition on BLOOD
They knew Jesus’s family - son of Joseph VS 42
They knew
Isaiah 54:13 “13 All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.
Jesus knew His audience well
and was there to teach them and today it it US to learn.
Purpose of this Sermon of Jesus.
Present— WHO HE IS
Process of Salvation
Power of Salvatin
remember the exact Words of Scripture that
give us the purpose of this book in John 20:30-31
John 20:30–31 (ESV)
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
and the purpose of this Scripture is to show us more about Jesus and the way
Who He is
That Life found In Him
how it can be ours
and the result of Eternal life
Where:
Jesus is located at the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberias
this is an important place to Jesus
this is where He feeds the 5000
but also where Jesus appears after the Cross to His disciples and has breakfast with them (john 21)
at the Synagogue in Capernaum vs 59
When:
Day after the feeding of the 5000
Morning after the Boat, the storm, and the Walking on Water of Peter
The boat immediately goes to the shore of Capernaum
The people on the shores of Tiberias notice that Jesus left and not with the disciples
so they in vs. 23
they call for an UBER
and boats show up to take them to Capernaum and they find Jesus
Why:
It makes sense to me that the people where seeking teaching
they came a ways following Jesus
and Jesus know they were hungry and feed them.
Jesus takes care of the Physical and Spiritual need
They were so focused on the food that they missed the message
They heard Him give thanks to God
THEN Jesus moves away and they are so caught up with the bread
that they don’t notice until later
in fact vs 24 the next morning they notice Jesus is gone and his disciples also.
I picture going to a large party and getting so caught up in the event that you realize later that the host of the party left hours ago and you did not even notice.
why is this mentioned,
To reveal there true intentions?
note: there is no record of what Jesus said to them
--- the people there had seen the signs and the healing
The people know of Jesus,
it was not going to see a new speaker
But Jesus in theses verses tell us
Jesus PRESENTS ---
Who He is = He is I AM — which we discussed last week
He is YAHWEH ---- which in many translations is I AM
the name that God gave Himself.
What our focus should be ---
Heaven things not Earthly things
What is truly important in our life== The work of God to take Jesus in
How we get to Him >>> BELIEVE in Him
To Teach salvation by faith alone
Believe in ME ----- This is a challenge to our warped traditional views --- we often want
Action change
Attendance change
Activity change
and all those should happen but we get in the way
JUST LIKE THESE LISTENERS TO JESUS SERMON
JESUS says to “BELIEVE in ME”
The WORLD TELLS that it is following rules or traditions or cultural influence that Saves you
It is More like BELIEVE and BE CHANGED
It taking in the Bread of LIFE
it is having Jesus a full and complete part of you.
Issue:
Jesus fed them earthly bread to feed them,
they did nothing to qualify to receive it,
all they had to do was receive it.
So now Jesus wants to feed them for eternity --- and they struggle and grumble
They wanted a sign in verse 30 ---
“send us bread from heaven like our ancestors”
OT CHECK:
Remember the Hebrews were grumbling about lack of food,
even saying they wanted to go back to Slavery in Egypt.
Moses prays and God Delivers
the Bread gave them Life, Sustained them, and they counted on it every day for 40 years
Jesus qualifies this and corrects
IT WAS NOT MOSES BUT
GOD the Father that sent it from Heaven
And Jesus in now clarifying to the Jews
I am the BREAD sent from Heaven to Save you.

Observations

Remember
Three divisions in His Sermon:
Revelation of His Person
Process of Salvation
Power of Salvation
Each is followed by a reaction from the crowd
Jesus is telling the Jews that HE IS GOD
Jesus is who they have been seeking
As the Bread sustained the Hebrews with Moses for 40 years
Jesus is coming to bring them life
Bread was life to the Hebrews
They understand what He is saying and it is why they are getting upset
JESUS is claiming to be GOD sent from heaven
IT is our Christmas Message every year
the Incarnation of Christ
that God so loved the world that He send Jesus FROM HEAVEN to earth to be born as Man
SON OF MAN --- vs 27
This sermon from Jesus is teaching that HE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN to EARTH
the Salvation Message
Seeking Jesus must be Eternally focused and not Earthly focused
Do not work for food that perishes but for the Food that endures to eternal life
MESSAGE --- SEEK JESUS take Him in Let Him reside in You
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Tell us Who He is
Tell us what to seek
and then tells us How to get it
John 6:29 ESV
29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
then Jesus gets to the challenging TRUTH
IT IS NOT FOLLOWING THE RELIGION OF THE DAY
NOR IS IT DOING THE CHURCH THING
NOR IS IT SIMPLY BEING a GOOD JEW or a GOOD PERSON
You must consume ME
You must take me ME
You must create ONENESS with ME
To the Jews the understood,
yet we may struggle a little today and miss the point
Jesus is NOT telling us to be cannibals
which is an extreme
but even today the act of transubstantiation is practiced in the Catholic Church
that during Mass the bread and wine become the
body and blood of Christ
YET i deeply believe what Jesus is teaching in HIS message
is the necessity of BECOMING
to be IN CHRIST
not just know CHRIST
but have HIS life IN YOU AND THROUGHOUT YOU
it is the meaning of the WORD EAT in these verses
to take him in
bread must be broken to eat
We take him in and he then like bread becomes part of Us.

Application

Friends this sermon is a simple message
We are to know that Jesus is God
that HE came to Earth to provide a payment for our sins — past present and future
that we are to BELIEVE in Him to obtain Eternal life
that is HE purpose on Earth
our purpose is to believe
and share this Good News with others
Jesus is the Bread of Life
and eating of Him will bring eternal life in Heaven
i pray that you take in the WHOLENESS
the FULLNESS of JESUS
Jesus is the Bread of LIFE
Eat of HIM, DRINK OF HIM
know that LIFE is only FULL of the SPIRIT
when we take HIM in
Jesus is the BREAD of LIFE.
When you do your homework this week
answering the question
WHO AM I________________
i want to pray that one of your first
entry is
I AM HIS
I AM CHRISTIAN
I AM A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST
I AM I AM
-- for I live my life to model and become a mirror image of Jesus.
