Provision Requires Sacrifice

Genesis 12 we begin the story of Abram:
75 year old Abram (exalted father)
Genesis 15:2 NKJV
2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
Calls him master or Adonai
He then changes his to Abraham meaning father of a multitude
Genesis 17:4–5 NKJV
4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.
So after 25 years he’s finally walking in the promise that God has for him
In Genesis chapters one and two we have the naming of all of creation
We find that Adam named Eve, his children and all of the animals, while God named the light, darkness, sky and land. From this we find something very interesting. Adam had authority over his wife, children and the animals, while God has authority over the light, darkness, sky and land. If you have authority over something, you have the right and responsibility to name it. Abram was named by his father Terah, the one who had authority over him. But, when Abram left his father's house and headed out on his own, God, who respected the authority of Terah previously, now takes the role of his authority and changes his name indicating a change in authority, not necessarily a change in character.
Everything changes in our lives when we give him the Authority over us
When we do what he wants us to do
Genesis 22:1 NKJV
1 Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
It’s better to have a here am I relationship than a
Where are you relationship with God
Genesis 22:2 NKJV
2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
1. Are you willing to Sacrifice your blessing?
Abraham was used to sacrificing things:
When God told him to get out of his country
He left all that was familiar and comfortable
When he met Melchizedek he gave him a tithe or a 10th of what he had
When God made a covenant in Genesis 17 he was circumcised at way too late!
But now the stakes are a bit higher
When you finally get what your asking for are you willing to give it to God?
Abraham was the only one that needed to be obedient
Genesis 22:3–5 NKJV
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”
2. There’s Faith in sacrifice
And we will come back
Genesis 22:6–8 NKJV
6 So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7 But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” 8 And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
Statement of Faith:
God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering
This might not be what it seems
Might not look how I thought it was going to go but I have to be obedient
Genesis 22:9–10 NKJV
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Could’ve been later teens and i’ve heard 25 or maybe a young man like 33
It’s important to be in the right place
In the right place in obdedience
In the right place hearing God’s voice
In the right location too
Genesis 22:11–12 NKJV
11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” 12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
God wasn’t asking Abraham to do anything outside of his nature
It’s one thing to be willing to lay it down and not have to
It’s another thing to lay it down completely
“If you respond with willingness to His call to sacrifice, it allows you to recognize His voice when He provides” -Sarah Johnson
Genesis 22:13–14 NKJV
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
3. There is no multiplication without Sacrifice
When we’re willing to surrender the blessing at His feet he multiplies what we have
Genesis 22:15–18 NKJV
15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
All throughout scripture you see people offering sacrifices to God and him not adding but multiplying:
Elijah with the woman with oil
She had to sacrifice her last meal to receive oil throughout the drought
The boy with the fish and bread had to give it Jesus’ disciples so he could multiply the fish
Galatians 3:14 NKJV
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Romans 8:31–32 NKJV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
