4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
Judas Iscariot is one of the most infamous characters ever.
What made Judas what he was?
There are a lot of elements to Judas’ character but what is revealed in the verses we just read is a heart of greed.
Judas was part of the greatest movement that has ever existed in the history of the world!
Judas was a companion of Christ Himself!
He saw the lame healed, the blind see, and even the dead raised to life!
But.
None of these things impacted his heart.
Being with Jesus wasn’t enough for Judas!
This is where greed takes us. To where we don’t even care about other people who are in need.
Greed led Judas to be a thief and to miss the bigger picture of what was going on.
Greed takes our eyes off of Jesus and fixes them on ourselves.
What do we do about Greed?
At the heart of Greed is a belief that if we do not get things for ourselves, we will be left wanting.
Psalm 23 begins with these words.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
We do not need to be greedy because our shepherd will provide for every need.
Trust the provision of the shepherd.
