Galatians 5:19 Sexual sins

· Now the works of the flesh are Manifest: (evident, obvious, plain)

· Adultery: not in some translations.

· Fornication: (Sexual Immorality) Pornia

o The umbrella of sexual sins. Homosexual, prostitution, beastality. Any sexual behavior that is not with your married spouse.

o The only sexual behavior that is pleasing or acceptable to God is between husband and his wife.

· Uncleanness: (Impurity)

o This has to do with sexual sins.

o This is sexual pleasure outside of a husband getting to (KNOW) his wife.

· Lasciviousness (Sensuality, Lewdness, Debauchery).

o This is giving our selves over to lust!!!

o No Lascivious eyes!

o No Lacivious desires.

o Matt 5:27-30

o We have to control our minds to think about Holy things, things that are pure.

· 1 Thess 4:1-8 passion of lust

Galatians 5:20

· Idolatry

o Worshipping other gods.

o Putting something else over God.

· Witchcraft (Sorcery)-

o Greek (Pharmakeia)

§ Where we get the word Pharmacy.

§ These were the pharmist of the Bible- but bad ones. Our local drug dealers today.

§ Now these witches would use drugs on people and tell them they had magical powers from the gods.

§ These were witches or soceres who would mix chemicals to do weird things, and claim they had powers from the gods.

· Hatred (Enmities)

o This is the opposite of love. It is hate not only toward God but to man.

o Verse:

o But this is private hatred. It starts in the mind. Then lashes out.

o 1 John 3:15

· Variance (Strife, discord, contentions)

o Hatred and emity lead to variance, strife.

o This is having a quarrel.

o 1 Cor 1:11, 3:3

o Conterntion, strife has no place in the Church and leads to division!

o This is the outward signs of hate, now not only are you thinking hate but now being hateful to the other person.

· Emulations (Jealousy)

o This is wanting something so bad you will do anything to obtain it.

- Neighbors car, wife, etc.

- Having a burning passion or zeal toward others.

- We can have good jealousy or bad jealousy.

- 2 cor 11:2

· Wrath (fits of anger, fits of rage, outburst of wrath).

o This is hate not only thought of, not only now treating people bad, but now raging out toward someone.

· Strife (Factions, rivalries, selfish ambitions, selfishness)

o This is doing things for self motives.

o Aristotle- “self-seeking pursuit of political office by unfair means.”

o Doing things for the community or church to give glory to self and not God.

· Seditions (divisions, dissensions)

o Literally splinting in two, division.

o This is what hates turns into. Starts with inward thoughts, to being hateful to others, to bursting out in rage, to splitting up families, or the Church!

o Rom 16:17- the sin so serious we need to avoid them!

· Heresies (Parties, part spirit)

o Choose, choise, prefer!

o 2 Pet 2:1

o Think of sects we see in NT Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes. These relious groups who had different beliefs. Where did they get their beliefs? Where did they want their kingdom?

Galatians 5:21

· Envying’s

o This is what hatred can lead to also. Its when you have hated someone so long that you are resentful to them.

o Getting upset at everything that happens to them, their new job, car, house, spouse, etc.

· Murders (missing in other translations)

o Matt 5:21-22

· Drunkenness

o The act of getting drunk.

o 1 Pet 1:13; 4:7; 5:8

o 1 Thess 5:5-8 sober twice (last Ribbon)

· Revellings (Orgies, Carousing)

o This is a drinking party or orgie party.

o This is letting yourself go to whatever, drinking, sexual pleasures, the whole 9 yards.
