Ephesians 6:13–17 NKJV
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
Focus on verse 17:
THE HELMET OF SALVATION
What a soldier always wears and what a soldier takes up in the battle
Picture of chart here.
These three equipments are what we take up in going to the battle and to engage in the heat of the battle.
STAND FIRM!
Picture of the Roman soldier’s helmet here.
Has to be made of the right material — describe the material of the Roman soldier’s helmet.
Anecdote on the modern helmet. Do you wear a paper helmet? Made of cardboard? Borrow Pastor Pete’s helmet and possible wear it. cannot wear a costume..
When it comes to our helmet it should be made of material that God made. It is all in the spiritual..
The weapons of our warfare are not carnal...
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood...
This is a Spiritual helmet which God has made and He Himself made..
They key to this scripture is an amazing passage in Isaiah. And Paul being a Bible scholar himself intentionally referred to this passage
Isaiah 59:17 NKJV
17 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, And was clad with zeal as a cloak.
Like the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation is a spiritual equipment that God almighty Himself wears.
Key: Word study
Image of word for salvation here - Deliverance
In Isaiah, the context is God’s vengeance, it is not very peaceful, God in His wrath avenges Himself against His enemies — also His people against His enemy.
The zeal of our God - he wears it as a cloak - HE FIGHTS THE BATTLES FOR US ---- WITH ZEAL. (examples).
Original word Helmet means something we wrap around our heads to protect our heads. How we think?
There is a more foundational meaning to our deliverance, when God delivered us from an eternity in hell.
Just as our helmet needs to be strong, our spiritual helmet the helmet of salvation should likewise be strong, which means OUR SALVATION IS SECURE!
“If Satan can’t keep you away from Christ, he will at least try to make you doubt your salvation.” (Billy Graham)
We are fighting lies about our salvation that come to our mind!
Our salvation is secure because God originated it, He effected it, and He will complete it.
God originated it - God saving us in our past.
God effected it - God’s continuing work in the present.
God will complete it - God’s promise of our final redemption.
The helmet of salvation helps us be:
Reminded of our deliverance in the past.
Renewed in the present.
Reliant on our Lord in our future.
So let us unpack the truth on the helmet of salvation:
The helmet of salvation helps us be:
Reminded of Deliverance in the Past
The greatest event in history past is the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Satan wants you to doubt your salvation in its efficacy. - The Cross is not enough.
Jesus’ sacrifice is perfect and offered for sin, once for all:
Hebrews 7:27 NKJV
27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
Protection of our mind - thoughts of past sin, Satan fills those minds with gaps
God has delivered us from our past.
The helmet of salvation helps us be:
2. Renewed in the Present.
The helmet of salvation protects the mind.
A mind that is saved is a renewed mind.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
How are we engaging the world?
How are we filtering the thoughts, the images that this world and its system throws at us?
There is a verse that talks about how we should live us saved people:
Philippians 2:12 NKJV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
Being used by some, that we should be nervous and always anxious about our salvation.
With reverence to God, we pursue obedience..
a healthy fear of offending God through disobedience.. and a great awe for God’s grandeur, majesty and holiness..
Press on, be part of the work - an idle mind is the Devil’s playground
It is God..
Philippians 2:13 NKJV
13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
The helmet of salvation helps us be:
3. Reliant on our Lord in the Future.
Jesus has already won.
Again, we are not fighting for victory, we are fighting from the victory that is already won by our leader the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. Look forward to our final redemption.
Ephesians 1:13–14 NKJV
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Titus 2:13 NKJV
13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
Hebrews 12:2 NKJV
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
I love the New International Version..
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus”
Now what about our real spiritual warfare, when you are active in God’s work you will face the onslaught of the enemy.
Remain on our knees and praying in the NAME OF JESUS!
In the heat of the battle, when you are battle weary, sometimes about to give up, maybe there is fear in your heart — you can draw strength to stand firm when we see our leader still standing, still in charge and issuing commands.
Looking forward we also look up to our leader (find a quote)
Image of the Roman squadron’s leader..
The foot soldier sees the helmet of his leader..
Great human commanders. (Patton, Eisenhower, etc.)
If we follow the Lord Jesus, we know that the greatest general ever is leading the charge!
Whenever you doubt your salvation..
Remember this: you were saved not because of good works you have done, but because of how immense the love of God is.
Three phrases about our salvation:
By Grace Alone.
Through Faith Alone.
In Christ Alone.
