OBJECT LESSON.....IF U REMEMBER
NOT GETTING IT....HARD HEARTS....NOT SEE OR HEARING
TURNING POINT IN JESUS MINISTRY/////GALILEAN MINISTRY MIRACLES
Mark 8:16–18 ESV
16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?
Mark 8:22–30 (ESV)
22 And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”
27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
Bethsaida: village of the fisher, PETER ANDREW PHILIP
eyewitness of Jesus’ miracles MONUMENT OF FAITH BUT NOT THE CASE....JESUS REBUKING THE CITY IN OTHER GOSPEL WRITINGS
Matthew 11:21–22 ESV
21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
NOT A MONUMENT OF FAITH, BUT A MONUMENT OF UNBELIEF
ONLY miracle where his miraculous healing didn’t happen immediately, but required a 2nd touch, it was a gradual healing
**not due to any lack in the power of JESUS “come forth” dead men…calm the wind and waves
And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village,
DON’T OVERSPIRITUALIZE THE TEXT.....BUT SEE AN UNDERLYING LESSON HIDDEN HERE
SOMETIMES WE NEED THE FAITH OF OTHERS TO BRING US TO JESUS
Did this man lack faith....was it just practical, he was blind....combo
Similar to the blind man, we often need the help of those around us to carry us to the Savior through prayer and faith.
Our faith is not always strong enough to get us to Christ on our own, but through the encouragement and faithful pursuit of other Christians, we can find ourselves at the feet of Christ ready to receive His healing touch.
When we are weak, He is strong and will renew our faith to believe in Him again (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).
and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.”
SPIT IN HIS EYES.......BC (before Covid)…medicinal, SEEMS this man could at one time see so maybe illness or wounds of some sort, warmth of his saliva.....building up his faith GROSS JESUS.....FEELS LIKE BLASPHEME
significance of the laying of hands
Laying on of hands......
1. Sacrifices offered to God......signifying consecration of that sacrifice....laying it aside/setting apart for God
2. Consecration of priests
3. Signifying a blessing ...Genesis 48 Jacob laid his hands on his grandsons' heads to confer God's blessing upon them.
James :elders lay hands on acutely ill, Jesus over and over TOUCHES.....intimacy of God.
In the ordaining of pastors
1 Timothy 5:22 ESV
22 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.
Mark 8:23–26 (ESV)
23 and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”
THERE’S A REASON FOR THIS DELAY…AGAIN, Jesus wasn’t off his A game.....he wanted to teach his disciples something and us.
Are you clearly seeing Jesus? Or is He blurry.....like a mighty tree
like disciples.....we a hard headed....hard hearted....keeps us from seeing god for who is truly is.
‘What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.’
Mark 8:26–29 (ESV)
26 And he sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.” 27 And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”
Matthew 16:17 ESV
17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
IN CLOSING
Mark 8:23 (ESV)
23 And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village....
Do you allow God to lead you to be alone with him?
YOU don’t wake up and it happens....
When we are willing to be “led” by Jesus to a place of solitude, He will impress Himself upon us in ways He may not have been able to within the confines of our busy life.
John 10:27 ESV
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
Romans 8:5 ESV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Psalm 23:2–3 (ESV)
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
