LUKE 18:9-14

INTRODUCTION:
This parable exposes us to the truth that we must come into God’s presence in prayer and worship a real understanding of His WORTHINESS and our UNWORTHINESS in and of ourselves.
A RIGHTEOUS SINNER? Lost, and you DON’T know it!
The Pharisee was standing in the position nearest to the altar, and thus, nearest to the presence of God.
His statements, in effect say: “God, you are so fortunate to have me in your midst!”
BLINDED to the reality of how depraved he is.
The most hopeless people in the Gospels are the Pharisees, not the publicans and sinners, and that is because they see no need of Him. And is not that the tragedy today?
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
DECEIVED by the goodness of his heart.
DECEIVED in his understanding of the Holiness of God.
DECEIVED by the Standards he was adhering to.
SATISFIED with his goodness in his own eyes.
LOST in a real understanding of the TRUE condition of his heart.
LOST in a real understanding of the ONLY Pathway to God.
RESULT: REJECTION BY GOD!
2. A REAL SINER? Lost, and you DO know it!
The Publican was standing in the rear, the position furthest from the altar of God.
His statements, in effect say: “God, I do not deserve to approach your presence!”
AWAKENED to the reality of how Depraved he is.
AWAKENED to the reality of his Sinfulness.
AWAKENED to the Holiness of God.
AWAKENED to his own Unworthiness to approach God.
RESULT: ACCEPTED BY GOD!
The publican stood afar off and beat his breast and said, ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner.’ I tell you that man had the finest theology of any man in all England.
Charles Spurgeon
3. REDEEMED SINNER? A Sinner, SAVED AND SANCTIFIED by the Blood and Grace of God, through FAITH ALONE in Jesus Christ.
Jesus has created a NEW HUMANITY, who relate to God on a NEW BASIS = GRACE!
Hebrews 10:14 NASB95
For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.
Hebrews 10:19–25 NASB95
Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
FORGIVEN through Repentance of Sin and Faith in Jesus.
ACCEPTED into the Family of God.
ACCEPTED into complete Fellowship with God.
SANCTIFIED by the Power of God through the Transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
