The Blotting Out Of Blaming (Colossians 2:8-15)
Captivity (8)
Captivity (8)
Spoil - to carry one off as captive, to lead away from the truth (Ephesians 4:14–15 “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”) (NOTICE ANY MAN, Saved or Lost)
Philosophy - the love of wisdom (here is man’s wisdom)
tradition of men
elements of the world
Carnal Christians more concerned about the world then the Kingdom of God.d
Romans 8:6–7 “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”
Completeness (9-10)
Completeness (9-10)
Christ is the the fullness of the Godhead (Trinity) bodily. If you want to see the complete God, look at Jesus Christ.
We are complete in Christ as well.
- Jude 1 “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:”
1 Peter 5:14 “Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
2 Timothy 2:1 “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”
2 Timothy 1:1 “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,”
1 Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”
Philippians 2:1 “If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,”
Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
Commander (10b)
Commander (10b)
Christ is the head of all principality and power. He spoiled all principality and power when He gave up His life on Calvary (vs.15)
- Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
Change (11-12)
Change (11-12)
Spiritual Circumcision - sign of an everlasting covenant
Genesis 17:13–14 “He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.”
Christ performed a circumcision of the heart when we got born-again.
Spiritual Baptism - Ephesians 4:5 “One Lord, one faith, one baptism,”
- 1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”
- Both are performed supernaturally. There is nothing fleshly about these changes. God does the changing.
Cleansing (13-14)
Cleansing (13-14)
Failure (dead in sins)
Flesh
John 1:12–13 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Flourishing (quickened together with him)
Forgiveness (forgiven ALL trespasses)
Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
Psalm 103:10–12 “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, So great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, So far hath he removed our transgressions from us.”
Hebrews 10:17 “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”
Flowing (14)
an ordinance is a decree. (order having the force of law)
During crucifixion, over the criminal’s head was placed a notice with his name and his crime.
(Notice) - a written or pronounced statement, thus a handwritten ordinance.
We all deserve to die a sinners death on the cross. Because of our ordinance that was against us and contrary to us, we should have been the one’s on the cross.
Matthew 27:33–37 “And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there; And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
An accusation is a statement of the wrongdoing a person had done that deserves judgment.
WHAT HAPPENED AT CALVARY IS THAT JESUS TOOK OUR SIN, OUR STATEMENTS OF GUILT, OUR ACCUSATIONS OF BEING SINNERS, NAILED THEM TO HIS CROSS AND BLOTTED OUT OUR SINS BY LITERALLY COVERING OUR SIN WITH HIS BLOOD.
The accusation of Condemned is now wiped clean.
The accusation of Sinner is changed to Saved.
The accusation of Lost is changed to Living.
Blotting out = to obliterate, to wipe away, HE WASHED US FROM OUR SINS IN HIS OWN BLOOD.
Christ showed all principalities and powers that sin has no dominion over Him. Christ said, “nah nah nah boo boo!”
