And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.
Everybody has a story....
It doesn’t matter your race!
It doesn’t matter what side of town you live on!
It doesn’t matter how much money you have in the bank!
It doesn’t matter how many degrees you have on the wall:
Associate
Bachelor's
Master's
Doctorate
It doesn’t matter if your single or married
With kids or without
You might have grew up with both parents in the home or in foster care
If we can all be HONEST, the person you see now Is not the person I’ve always been!
What makes coming to a church gathering so powerful... is that we all have a story to tell!
In the book of John
Chapters 13-17 Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure
In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
“In the day you will ask nothing of me” - After His ascension
Then Jesus said…
“Whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you”
Let me pause for a moment… This is not a Christmas list
Jesus said…
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
The question I need to ask myself is.... Am I asking for me to be glorified or for God to be glorified?
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
The “whatever” is according to God’s will so God will be Glorified
“Until now you have asked nothing in my name”
They did not have to ask in His name because His was with them… But His time was coming
Jesus was no longer going to be physically with them
But He told them....
“Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
There is nothing more fulfilling than the Joy of being in the Will of God!
In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
In order for this activation to be complete He had to go back to the Father!
So He had to crucified
He had to Die
He had to be buried
He had to rise again.... ‘
But when he rose!
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus said....
And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
So Peter.... Who was with Jesus when he told them about His name…
Got up on the day of Pentecost and said
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.
“A man lame from birth”
A man who had a story just like us…
This man was begging at the Temple…
But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”
The Bible said Immediately - His feet and ankles were made strong
Leaping up! He began to walk, leap, and praise God!
The people wanted to know what happened?
And when Peter saw it he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we have made him walk?
Peter told them!
And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.
His name
By faith in His name
Even though we all have a different story
We all have one thing in common!!!
If it had not been for Jesus.....
