We are in a war. Ephesians 6:10-12
Ephesians 6:10–12 CSB
Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
We need to know our enemy. Satan wants to be like God. Isaiah 14:12-15
Isaiah 14:12–15 CSB
Shining morning star, how you have fallen from the heavens! You destroyer of nations, you have been cut down to the ground. You said to yourself, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will set up my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of the gods’ assembly, in the remotest parts of the North. I will ascend above the highest clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you will be brought down to Sheol into the deepest regions of the Pit.
He tempted Eve by saying she could be like God. Genesis 3:5
Genesis 3:5 CSB
“In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
He wants to be like God and wants to be worshiped as god.
Yadah: root word is Yod which is hand. Cast down, to throw, to shoot arrows to give thanks, laud, to confess the name of God, to revere or worship with outstretched hands. First mention of praise in the Bible. Gen. 29:35
Genesis 29:35 CSB
And she conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
A look at the ways worship was used in battle in the scripture:
Israelites fought Amalekites with Outstretched hands Exodus 17:10-16. Jehovah Nissi the Lord is my Banner.
Moses’ Song: Exodus 15:14-16 and Joshua 2:8-11. Worship reverberated in the land for more than 40 years. The words of his song stayed in the land
Jericho: Shouting, trumpet blasts. Frequency brought down the walls. Joshua 6.
Jehoshaphat - 2 Chronicles 20 Singing and shouts of praises Confused the enemy so that it turned on itself.
Praise in the midst of pain and suffering breaks the chains! Acts 16:25-34.
Psalm 149 CSB
Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel celebrate its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and lyre. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the faithful celebrate in triumphal glory; let them shout for joy on their beds. Let the exaltation of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, inflicting vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, binding their kings with chains and their dignitaries with iron shackles, carrying out the judgment decreed against them. This honor is for all his faithful people. Hallelujah!
Our praise has a place: should be corporate (vs. 1) and our praise should be private (vs. 5).
Our praise has a posture: should be in humility (bowed) (vs. 4) and in triumph (vs. 5) (manifestation of power/testimony)
Our praise is for a purpose: to bring pleasure to Yahweh (vs. 4) and punishment to his enemies (vs. 7-9).
a praise in their mouth and double-edged sward in their hand (yad)
inflicting vengeance on the nations: rebuke pagan/heathen
Luke 10:19 CSB
Look, I have given you the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing at all will harm you.
While praise/worship is not the only weapon God has given us to fight the enemy, it can be one of the easiest for us to access.
Worship will be our eternal job. Revelation 4 and 5.
