Introduction

When I was 12 years old I used to tell people these exact words… “Bon Jovi is my idol”
In my defense I had not yet memorized the 10 commandments and I wasn’t super familiar with the book of exodus.
But here was the thing… I thought Bon Jovi was the coolest person in the world.
Living on a Prayer, You give love a bad name, and then at 12 we are just two years removed from its my life being released.
the hair.... I really wanted to be Bon Jovi....
But here is what happened as I got older Bon Jovi got way less cool to me, and my interest moved on to something else.
This humorous story illustrates a few points… but one that is really important
if we put anything else in the place of God it will not satisfy.... its importance in your life, its satisfaction will fade…
In fact even Worship… of anything other than God will lead to an emptiness and longing for something else to worship.
Even true of your relationship to church.....

So Today I want us all to understand why God is worthy of our worship.

We are in a series working through the Mission of Ascend
Last week Mission and Vision and this week will be looking at the Worship W .
Transition: And our Big idea this morning comes straight from the definition we gave for worship last week… here it is

B.I. Worship is the response of praise and adoration for who God is?

- Why do we worship God? How do we worship?

Passage background

Who wrote Revelation? John (Gospel 1+2+3 John, Revelation)
John was persecuted because he was fulfilling the mission of witnessing to what Jesus had done.
preaching the gospel and making disciples. As part of his persecution, he was exiled to the island of Patmos. Where he receives direct revelation from the Lord and writes this book.
Revelation is a book that accomplishing a few things... 1. reveals symbolic warnings about the end of all things… .but it does not stop there.. 2. Reveals (what where) present warnings for the first century church. 3. Reveals glimpses into the current heavenly realities.
Revelation is full of application for the believer today.

In todays passage

you are going to have questions about the great voice (who is it) … but it doesn’t matter for our sermon today.
we care more about what they are saying than who is saying it…
Angelic beings....
24 Elders I speculate… (12 Tribes of Isreal + 12 apostles)
What matters is what they are doing?
Lifiting their praises to God.
If we are trying to define how we on earth are suppose to worship this sounds like a pretty good place to start
a “great voice” is singing their praises to God for two things...
1. the downfall of Evil.
2. marriage supper of the Lamb = Jesus reigning forever.

Read Passage (Rev 19:1-9)

Why do we worship?

Revelation 19:1 ESV
After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, crying out, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
Hallelujah = God be praised!
Hebrew. Praise ye the Lord
Praise = to ascribe approval to something…
God be worshiped Why? (Salvation, Glory, Power)

1. Salvation

Have you came to a recognition that God has saved you?
Titus 3:4–7 ESV
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
What has he saved you from?
Deliverance from the power and effects of sin… your sin and sin in creation.
A. What pops in your mind when I say that? B. is it… Heaven, is it no more sickness, is it to no longer be bound by addictions, frailty of your body, your own evil thoughts, a mistake you made… the evil of this world, others pain hurt, injustice…
Praise be to God that in Christ we are promised an eternal reality where all of these things are no more.
Jesus Christ did not come into the world to help you to forget your sin. He has not come to furnish you with a cloak with which to cover it. He has not appeared that He may so strengthen your minds (as some men would have you believe) that you may learn to laugh at your iniquities, and defy the consequences thereof. For no such reason has the Son of God descended from Heaven to earth. He has come, not to lull you into a false peace, not to whisper consolation which would turn out to be delusive in the end, but to give you a real deliverance from sin by putting it away, and so to bring you a true peace in which you may safely rejoice. - Charles Spurgeon
This alone would make God worthy of worship.... but the text does not stop there.
Transition

2. Glory Glory = Doxa

Why is Glory attributed to God?
Glory is a word used to desbribe God all throughout the bible .
When you come in contact with the Glory of God you recognize how small you are...
Glory is most often pictured as Bright Light.... why because when something is glorious it overwhelms everything in its presence .
Deric Rose this past week on playing with Ja Morant this season… he said, “people want to compare our game, but the reality is at this point in my career he is on a another level)

In the Old Testament the Glory of God was unapproachable....

Exodus 33:18 ESV
Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
The Holy of Holies
Chain the priest hand him a bell and send him in…
you could not see the Glory of God…

And Yet… .

John 1:14 ESV
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Jesus bring the Glory of God down to earth… rids the world of sin… and now we ourselves will one day not only dwell with God But witness him in all his Glory.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

3. Power

What does it mean to say God is powerful?
Ability to accomplish.
When we understand Gods power we recognize:
Nothing else compares
how powerless we are.
and our need for his power.
And through Jesus we have access to the power of God…
1 Corinthians 1:26–31 ESV
For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
You have no power, but yet you have access to the one who has all the power… and in Jesus he can work in you…
Transition: So this is why God is worthy of Worship…
Now Part two how do we worship… lets reread vs 6-7.

How do we worship?

Revelation 19:6–7 ESV
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready;

Step 1: Rejoice & Exult

Rejoice Define: Take joy inward
Exult Definition: to express joy outward.
Have you taken… joy in these truths?
Have expressed to God your joy in these truths?
Could someone look at your life and say yep… that is a life of rejoicing and exulting?
This is the fruit of a proper belief of who God is… you cant force this but its a result of worship.

Step 3: Give Glory

Define: Ascribe Value and worth
How can you give God glory one if he already has it…
Who gets credit for the good in your life?
When we put God where he belongs we understand who we are.
You are not the hero of your story....
make yourself the most important figure of your life and it will not end up well.
This is something that is crushing our society…
1980s: “self-esteem” movement 1990s: “self-made” movement 2000s: “self-help” movement 2010s: “believe in self” movement 2020s: “self-love” movement it’s all the same humanism wearing different masks. however, you were created to trust in Someone bigger than “self”. - Shane Pruitt
Application: You are not the main character of the story…
How can you build your life around giving God Glory? (Time, Finances, relationships, work)

Conclusion

We are made for worship
when you understand Gods (salvation, glory, and power)
you are moved to Rejoice, exult and give glory.
Let me close one more verse....
Revelation 19:9 ESV
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
Christian: Let our lives be driven by worship… May God weed out the places that we worship things other than him… and put himself right in there.
Non christian: to those in the room that you may not yet live out of a heart posture of worship today is the day… Come join the family!
its this simple
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
